Sentinels would probably be the way to go if the first MCU X-Men film goes heavy into the allegories that make the X-Men….the X-Men

Yeah the first villain for the X-Men has to be humanity in some way. Don't really care which anti-mutant group they go with (Trask/Sentinels, Purifiers, Friends of Humanity etc.), but it'd be a miss to lead off with a mutant villain IMO

‘God Loves, Man Kills’ is a timely story to adapt, imo, especially if Kitty is a focus.

It could easily follow (or be mixed into) the sentinels

What I’ve argued forever and still think is, the story should be a mix of Night of the Sentinels, God Loves Man Kills, and the Morlocks.

Would be so fitting to have the POV character (Jubilee?) meet the X-Men and the Morlocks at the same time, and for there to be tension between those groups, only for them to then be united against sentinels and human bigots. Would emphasize the allegorical side of Marvel’s mutants, and also give an explanation for the X-Men not being a big presence in the “MCU” until now (that comes from characterization and narrative instead of stupid lore shit).

Feels like the villain will be Mister Sinister, though. Which, he rules, so whatever I guess… but, if he’s not both very camp and very scary, then what’s the point.

I agree with the above except I feel like including the Morlocks might be a bit too much, although then again, audiences are very familiar with the X-Men by this point, so maybe it's okay to do a lot in their first go-round since presumably there won't be a lot of time spent explaining things.

I also think Sinister is a mistake as a first-time villain, but then again, I guess I'm still thinking as if this were a brand-new franchise and not just another iteration of a franchise that's gone on for years. I just think if you're introducing the X-Men into the MCU that immediately going up against someone like Sinister requires a lot more explanation than the film should have time for.

I disagree that either of those concepts is all that complicated.

The Morlocks: “There are homeless & runaway mutants who had nowhere else to go, so they made their own encampments underground.”

Sinister: “What if there were an old mutant mad scientist who loved eugenics and theater?”

I didn't mean that they're complicated, I meant it's a whole extra thing on top of reintroducing this new team and their place in the MCU in general, especially if you want to include Sinister's fixation on the Summers family.

I just think Sentinels are both simple and tie extremely neatly into the main themes of the X-Men to make them a very easy starter villain to use.

I think you may be overthinking how messy or dense or whatever the Morlocks are conceptually, but whatever, lol.

In the case of Sinister, you’re actually making a great case for him being the villain if this iteration of X-Men is led by Cyclops. I’m always advocating for Storm as team leader and Cyclops utilized a bit differently. But, if the emphasis is on Scott in charge to start with, then an antagonist he’s personally connected to would be smart. The orphan backstory would help him connect better to Jubilee, too, and give a set-up to bring in the Starjammers down the road.

(My only concern is that a lot of the most interesting stuff also involves Jean and the Phoenix, which will be weird to navigate without retreading unsuccessful films. But hey, there are ways to massage and shuffle that and make it work.)

Well now you're making a case for the opposite; I think a starter villain should be someone who affects the entire team, not just tied personally to one or two people. I think a first film should be focused on the team as a whole, and save more personal stakes for future films.

And I don't really know how to explain this better, but it's not that I think the Morlocks are too complicated, I just think they'd make more sense in a second film than a first film. Establish the core first, then start exploring the fringes.

However, I again concede I'm looking at it as if the franchise was starting over, not glossing over things as if people already know the X-Men and don't need a refresher.

I'm actually unsure at this point what Marvel wants to do. For Fantastic Four they're kind of doing a little of both, but they're leaning into the Fox X-Men a lot harder, so I'm curious where this is going.

I'd also prefer Sinister be a 2nd or 3rd film villain, but the Morlocks make a lot of sense for a first movie, especially if they decide to go with some kind of anti-mutant group as the villain. Introducing the Morlocks before Sinister also works a little better if they wanna pull from their history in the comics (though hopefully they'll switch out/change the role of one of the other key players there...)

I don't know, my thinking is the first film focuses on the concept of mutants trying to be accepted and co-exist with humans, but the Morlocks introduce the idea of what if there's a group of mutants that can't easily co-exist? What then? And I think how much sense that makes in a first film depends on how much they want to take for granted that the audience doesn't need re-explained. I just don't want a lot of things glossed over or half-assed.

See I actually think that's a dynamic that plays well for introducing mutants to the audience. The X-Men's "pretty/passing" privilege is something that's almost exclusively touched on in online discussions, but it's really important to the mutant/human dynamic and I'd love to see it explored. If they did go the Sentinels route for the villain, it'd be pretty easy to work them in too because they'd 100% be among the first targets for anti-mutant propaganda campaigns.

Hell, if they want to take a bigger swing, bring in the fact that Xavier explicitly ignored the Morlocks because they wouldn't serve his mission

Five episodes into my rewatch of Jessica Jones Season 3 and Jesus Christ, Trish and Hogarth are in competition for who is the absolute worst, but at least Hogarth knows she's a terrible person. Trish is just so unbelievably self-absorbed.

Upon just waking up, my mind wandered and I had a real fucking crazy thought.

What if when the Avengers willed everyone back in Endgame, they actually pulled them from a completely separate universe, and that's where Tony Doom comes from? That would be wild.
