In the course of my rewatch of the Netflix Marvel shows, something I'd forgotten that I'd been thinking about when it comes up is how much sex happens.

Like, I'd remembered Jessica Jones, because of that whole funny "Oh hey, we both have superpowers, we can go all out" little ditty, although I'd forgotten how long it went on for. But Luke Cage and The Punisher also have sex scenes, and I'm not sure how much it really services the story to have them go on for as long as they do or in the way that they do.

For example, Punisher has Russo and Madani, which fine, we're showing that they've started a relationship that is other than professional, and Madani is also blowing off some stress. But I don't know that we need to see Russo behind Madani and like, showing as much as possible without showing the relevant bits.

I just wonder how much is storytelling and how much is "hey, audiences are perverts, let's give them what they want".

It could also be because I'm watching this stuff with my mom and so I'm a little hyper-aware of awkward viewing. I guess I probably wouldn't think this much about it if I were watching it alone.

There’s this great movie I saw the other year I think you and your mom would really enjoy together. It stars Gwen Stacy, the Hulk, and Norman Osborn. The Foreigner from Kraven the Hunter is there, too!

I think it’s called Poor Things? Good shit.

Getting flashbacks to watching Katherine Hahn's detailed sexual remarks to John C. Reilly in Stepbrothers with my parents in high school lol. I felt very uncomfortable

when the first scary movie came out (i was 12), my parents didnt really see too many trailers so thought it was just a silly funny comedy poking fun at horror movies, so they took me and my sister (she was 9) to see it in the movies.

if i survived that yall can watch a marvel sex scene with your moms. pipe down.

Not sure what's warranting this kind of response. I was trying to have a serious conversation, but whatever.

To clarify, I am not being anti-sex or whatever, I just wondered if bits were excessive given that they add nothing to the story or characters.

Do they add nothing or do they add nothing for you? They were written and filmed for some reason right. Figure it out. Idk why either!

Well isn't that what conversation is for? To discuss the merits and etc instead of spending it making me feel like an idiot?

Pen I’m sorry that we seemingly upset you, but our reaction is par for the course. It’s just joking around. If I had something serious to add to the discussion I would have!

lemme preface this by saying i'm ace, so unless they're portrayed in a uniquely aesthetically pleasing way, sex scenes do nothing for me.

i suppose the sex scenes are meant to enhance the gritty realism that separates the netflix shows from mainline mcu. look how "for adults" we can go with these superhero stories!

you can have a very suggestive scene without actually showing any fucking. Arcane manages to keep its TV-14 rating while still having a very suggestive (but imo very tasteful) scene towards the end of s2.

on the other end of things you have the sex scenes in The Boys that are kinda just there to be edgy and gross. by that metric the Netflix MCU shows are pretty tame. maybe just a random background actor titty here and there.

Yeah. I’m sure, in their head, they have rich backstories for the characters and set intentions like “I’m going to bring this character to life as if they’re in an A24 drama” but what is on screen ends up being standard Marvel popcorn stuff.

Flo, I love your work, but girl… you don’t have to call your Marvel Studios movie “A24-feeling.”

    It just bummed me out.

I put some thought into my post and immediately out of the gate the first five or six replies the vibe was "you're weird/dumb/a prude for thinking this".

I mean, all @GrantCloud said at first was "huh". What do I even do with that?

First, thank you for taking the topic at face value. I appreciate it and you.

And yes, this is what I mean. Like, it made sense in Jessica Jones because of the context and vibe of the show, but in Punisher, what does Billy taking Madani from behind tell us about these characters?

Nothing. Or if it does, I don't get it. And I'm clearly not the only one, because this was pointed out as a trope on TV Tropes that sex just happens on the show with no buildup and no real purpose. I didn't pull this opinion out of thin air.

Sorry if I still sound defensive. I'm still a little hurt, @JoshIsMediocre .
