You’d think they’d hire a writer before they tried to get The Rock as Apocalypse for their first X-Men movie
I remember him as the guy who did continuity for the TV channel Dave which makes those somewhat haunting in retrospect
I probably should’ve read the article. Didn’t realize Marvel was trying to find out who Toast (+Shine) was specifically
Leaks build hype and generate discourse. Marvel should be finding out who Shine and Toast are so they can be paid
This is certainly a take. I disagree with pretty much almost all of it, other than the discourse part.
To elaborate more, although I really don't want to go down this rabbit hole, but it feels like leaks have really just turned discourse around these movies into a mess of false expectations and pre-emptive disappointment. It's been killing hype more often than not based on everything I've read. There's larger issues surrounding that, of course, but maybe this leak culture we've allowed to fester can go fucking chill for a bit, you know?
I 100% agree. I like leaks because it’s fun to discuss with your friends even if you know one is complete bullshit. But the majority is probably doing what you said and it’s just making it all more toxic
Anytime there’s hype there will be some form of toxic engagement because you have people who want to throw their two cents into it. I don’t think that takes away the fact that a lot of discourse between the announcement and release date of Marvel films is through leaks. Leaks promote films during the months when there would otherwise be zero publicity.
But the problem is that leaks and the “leakers” themselves are creating an environment where leaks are promoting expectations for a movie that can never be met. I’m sure there’s a whole section of the internet with people still bitching that Tom Cruise didn’t show up as Iron Man in MoM. And now these leakers have people thinking The Rock is the top choice for Apocalypse. So people are pissed off that he could be cast and others are pissed when he doesn’t get cast, and all because the leakers just wanted to stir the pot for engagement.
You realize that doesn't mean what I'm saying isn't also true, right? These aren't mutually exclusive concepts. Something can be beneficial and toxic.
I do, and if I was replying to you I would have tagged you lol. But I think Justin’s point is also fair that there’s gonna be a toxic environment no matter what so to blame leaks for that is kinda silly as if twitter was ABOUT to be normal and then just couldn’t help themselves.
I'm not blaming leaks or at least not completely, but I'm mainly refuting Justin's assertion that these people should be paid like they're doing a service. That's what irks me. Also, sorry, when you said "You can't tell me...." I thought you were responding to the person who introduced the claim, not the proverbial universe.
Some people are gullible and some are not. If someone is going into leaks without an ounce of safe skepticism then that’s their own issue. That’s not an issue with the discourse with leaks, imo.
I wasn’t being serious that they should be paid. I was just making light of how leakers typically cause more discourse and promotion for the films. Marvel should be glad something is keeping the films fresh in the minds of audiences, especially with all of the delays since Covid. Leaks kept the communities invested.
