I don't think it's as complicated as they're making it sound. I don't think it means the X-Men will have existed all along, I think it means the X-Men we're getting in the MCU will be from the animated universe. So whatever X-Men we get crossing universes will be them and not strictly brand new X-Men.

 

It would be hilariously cool if true. "Fox's X-Men are coming to the MCU... but not the ones you're expecting... (wink)"
