Oh great, it’s the whole “a character deserves to get a film because of their gender/race instead of what Marvel thinks is best for the arc” argument. We have clear, public comments of Kevin saying he wants to do a Black Widow Film so if they thought it was best for the first 3 phases then they would have done it.

You’re posts are very shitty. You should stop that and think about it ... it’s starting to get really obnoxious, the line you’re clearly walking and how often I see it. How sexist are you in real life? Your posts make me think a lot. It annoys me that once a week you do this.

Remember when Marvel decided to adapt the, at the time, obscure property Guardians of the Galaxy, which features a talking raccoon and a tree that talks like a Pokemon? And, for the lead character in said film, they cast a chubby supporting actor from Parks and Rec? But, because of the quality of the film and the power of their brand, that film was a hit?

Imagine if this studio that has released 17 films over a 10-year period, at an escalating rate that has now reached 3-per-year, were to use that power to promote more representation in the white-dude-dominated mess that is Hollywood.

Black Widow has a long history as a lead character. So does Shang-Chi. Monica Rambeau doesn't have as much, but when she was Captain Marvel, she was the leader of the Avengers for a few years. The Runaways could've made a good film, as could Luke Cage (who could've been an Avenger then) or Cloak & Dagger. Black Panther could've happened way sooner than Year 11/Film 18. This example is a deeper cut, but something could be done with Red Wolf.

And that's just some of the high profile examples that existed before the first Avengers film (that certainly wouldn't have been more of a stretch than GOTG or Ant-Man.) Going into the future beyond Avengers 4, we now have Riri Williams Ironheart, Sam Wilson Captain America, Kamala Khan Ms Marvel, Amadeus Cho Hulk, Miss America Chavez, Jane Foster Thor, Miles Morales Spider-Man, Silk, Kate Bishop Hawkeye...

Not that they have to do all or even most of these as lead characters in films right now. But, just a couple to expand beyond white dudes named Chris plus one sole black man and one sole white woman would be awesome. And, characters like Ironheart, Amadeus Cho, Monica Rambeau, and Miss America could at least be brought into another film's supporting cast with the hopes for a spinoff down the road. (Cho would be hard with the Hulk rights, but maybe a "Champions" film centered on him could get around that.)

I don't know why I keep dropping these long posts like this, lol. With how stubborn people are, it's probably a waste of time. Hopefully these open conversations are doing at least some small good!

Do you not think that the disappointing comic sales of Riri as Ironheart and female Thor will hinder Marvel Studios from putting them into the films? Sam as Cap, Silk, and Miles as Spider-Man are things I see them doing within the next 5 years and probably during phase 4, but I think we’ll be waiting longer for the rest (phase 5 or 6 territory).

And with the TV shows, I would add Kamala Khan to the list that could be a movie, but she’ll most likely be made into a TV series, or at the very most Marvel will have her be a sidekick in a movie.

Mighty Thor is literally one of Marvel's best-selling comics.

And GOTG didn't even have a monthly book when that film was announced, so I don't think Marvel Studios cares what is currently selling in comic form. As much as comic fans hate to admit this, comics are a niche market, and adaptations in film and television define what gets published way more than current publication affects films in any way beyond creating more to mine from. That's why the idea of Marvel cancelling F4 allegedly to get back at Fox always felt like nonsense to me.

As for Ms Marvel, the types of stories she often has are better suited for television (though her powers might not look great there), and all the Inhuman stuff has been there thus far. But, I think that character really deserves the spotlight that a film would bring to her.

Which comics along with Ironheart had disappointing sales? I thought Mighty Thor was one of them. Was it only Ironheart?

While I typing my last comment Doctor Strange propped in my head and I don't think he has had a good selling comic since the 70s.

I only get rude once the other people do. I clearly structured my post to resemble his. I’m not sexist at all. Sorry that you find people sexist because they don’t think Marvel should have shoehorned in a Black Widow Film. Just go ahead and block my account.

  8. No I think you’ve exhibited sexist traits by how often you end up using, if I’m charitable, microaggresions on this forum ... it’s a lot. I’m not going to block your account, if you keep making questionably sexist posts at the same clip as before I’ll just ban you. I’m tired of how often you walk right up to the line. I don’t get why you keep doing it ...

I don't recall what Invincible Iron Man (the Ironheart series) sales have been, but if they've been low, it probably has more to do with the series getting a new #1 after just 1 year/14 issues, plus there being a companion series starring Doctor Doom.

That's the problem with the stupid rhetoric around Marvel sales and diversity. The bigger problem is botched business decisions. Plus, those sales are affected largely by those books appealing more so to audiences that don't feel welcome in the average comic shop (particularly women). While we don't have solid numbers, there is evidence that these "diverse" do a lot better in digital sales.

Convenient that adding a female-led film is automatically "shoehorning." Remember when Phase 3 was announced, but Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man & the Wasp weren't on the line-up? Remember how release dates had to be shuffled, with Black Panther being one of the films pushed back, to make room for Spidey? But hey, that doesn't count as shoehorning. Wonder if it would've had done Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker.

I don’t believe Marvel ever released the numbers for the sales and only mentioned the sales being disappointed at a Comic Con of some sort because comic shops were complaining that they were getting more issues than they could sell? I don’t keep up with comics outside of X-Men, so I don’t know the full details. All I know for sure is that Miles’ Spider-Man run seems to be one of the fan-favorites since 2012.

    ————-

I think the Spider-Man movie was shoehorned because they 1) wanted a Spider-Man movie before Infinity War 2) Sony wanted a summer release

#2 is the only reason I can think of that would cause Marvel Studios to push one of their own films (Thor) from the summer to fall. It wouldn’t surprise me if summer releases were mentioned during their MCU/Sony discussions.

I was thinking about it today.

What would any of you want in a Black Widow film? What would be the best story to tell?

With it being in phase 4 or later, I don’t know if a present day story would work that much. I would like a film that shows her training, first missions, and how she became the Black Widow in the Avengers films. I think that would be the most interesting for her character development. Showing how she stumbled upon Nick Fury would be cool as well.

tbh, i'd be more interested in the moment Natasha changes sides from KGB over to SHIELD. where she mentions Clint was sent to kill her but turns her instead.

A period film about her would definitely be a breath of fresh air as long as they don’t make it be (insert super villain) fights Black Widow and (insert Avenger friend).

Her origin in the comics is a cool story, but at the same time, I don't think I'd like an origin prequel at this stage in the game. Could've been a good fit in Phase 2, but beyond Avengers 4, a modern-day film makes more sense.

One of my ideas I've thought of, though, would still use her origin via flashbacks: Mark Waid and Chris Samnee did a fantastic 12-issue run in the past couple years where Nat dealt with a threat from her past in the Red Room while on the run from SHIELD. A film inspired by that story with some extra Deadly Origin influence in the flashbacks would be perfect.

My weirder but in a way more interesting idea combines a bunch of comic ideas into a thrilling whole: Nat joins MI-6 agent Shang-Chi in the fight against a new version of the Mandarin, who'd be revealed to be Shang-Chi's father. Jessica Drew Spider-Woman would be in the film initially as an indoctrinated agent of the Mandarin before being won over by Nat in the third act. Pre-estaestablished SHIELD-related characters would be able to round out the supporting cast (maybe Nick Fury would be the one who connects Nat with Shang-Chi).

Tim, what the hell was that comment about in the Kevin thread? When have I showed any distaste for any MCU films that are centered on women or POC? Asking how Marvel would fit them into the schedule is not a sign of distaste. It's speculating on how stories that are currently not being used will be used in the future.

I’ve also made my opinion annoyingly present that i’m against white producers and actors taking over Asian roles and stories from Japan. I’ve made it apparent how Danai is my favorite actor in both Black Panther and The Walking Dead. I honestly have no clue why you wanted to make the claim that I only care for white male actors.

I don't understand why you'd want to drag your crap from that thread into this one for more people to see, but whatever.

I hate to call public attention to a private conversation, but someone with a very similar track record recently messaged me apologizing for being a douche and saying he was gonna take some time to sort stuff out. I have no idea if he's fully realizing how wrong he's been, but he at least realized that something was wrong with what he was doing. I appreciate that.

I share that because I highly encourage you to stop putting your foot deeper down your throat and similarly take some time to reassess things. It'd do you a lot of good.

Oh, and for the record, I used to suck, too. If AbsolutePunk were still around, you'd probably be able to find depressing evidence of that. It took years of good influences both online and in person to get me where I am, and as a white dude, I guarantee I have a long way still to go.

With some wisdom and patience, FreshnessExpired could someday be a username people are excited to see post, instead of one people joke about as an idiot no one misses. As a big fan of redemption, I'd like to see that happen.

It came out a few days ago that Marvel is not going to be producing anymore new Netflix shows. They have stuff planned, but they are holding off until their own streaming service is up and running in order to compete with Hulu and Netflix.

It's kind of a weird way of going about things. They have two brand new shows coming out this month and their Netflix shows coming down the line. Will they be pulling the Netflix shows for their service? It all feels pretty money grubbing (which it 100% is)

What I read only said they were going to make original Marvel for their service but did not mention the Netflix stuff at all.

Is there a source for the Netflix part?

Apparently all the stuff in production is safe and upcoming stuff about to film like Iron Fist s2 too. But everything could change come 2019 which is when Disney want to start their streaming service. So I don't think we'll know too many more details for a while yet.

I only watched it cuz I listened to this. Lexi seems like the coolest person ever. Listening to how passionate she is about a film she didn't want to make was wonderful.

She's awesome. I love her Twitter feed. Super passionate about all the right things.

Her story about how the Virginia Tech shooting affected her movie pitch is great, and also is why I haven't felt like watching the new Netflix series yet.

I also love how War Zone is super violent, funny, and generally ridiculous while also being beautifully shot. The blend of gorgeous and trashy really gives the film a unique feel.
