I don’t want Tony to pass the mantle down to anyone. Once RDJ leaves, let Iron Man go with him.

Yeah, this is what I assumed, too. Easily the most logical explanation. These hints to them pulling the trigger on this make me happy.

Why? What reason do you have to support the low-charisma Bucky Barnes donning the Captain America mantle, while opposing literally anyone rocking the Iron Man mantle outside of Tony?

Rhodey had the mantle briefly in I think the 80s and is already essentially just Iron Man with a paint job, so it'd be a logical fit for him. Plus, he's already had two different mantles in his handful of MCU appearances. It's not a change that has to happen (if they have him on the main Avengers roster after Phase 3 still as War Machine, it'd largely accomplish the same thing), but it'd create a nice emotional beat when Rhodey officially makes that decision. And, it's the easiest and most logical attempt at executing the passing of an established mantle in the MCU.

Tony Stark’s role as Iron Man is not the same as Steve’s role as Captain America. Johnson and the Russos have done a good job at establishing it’s an identity when it comes to Steve Rodgers / Captain America. Stark and Iron Man are one. I’m fine with War Machine taking Iron Man’s spot in the group, but not his identity.

    I do not exist.

I've not heard of there being a precedent in the comics but could Pepper become Iron Man (Iron Woman?) in the MCU? The suits were programmed to save her in IM3 weren't they... so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch in the world they've created. I don't know. Would be cool to have a female.

She used to use a suit in the comics with the code name Rescue, but I don't think she was an Avenger or anything.

If they were to make another Iron Man film, it'd be cool to see her suit up in an official capacity in a supporting role. As for getting someone to be the Avengers' new Iron Man, though, Rhodey totally makes the most sense. If not Rhodey (or I'd say maybe along with Rhodey), they should introduce Riri Williams as Ironheart, who has more precedent as a leading character, plus Marvel desperately needs more WOC.

Whenever Tony retires, I think Pepper should too. I'm just not that big a fan of her character though.

I'd like Ironhesrt to come into the fold, but they better hurry. Rhody having a super smart niece coming out of nowhere to become Ironheart this late without any previous mention might be weird.

Yeah Rhodes definitely makes more sense - I was just interested!

There's a bunch of back and forth, but why not just go by the comics and have Riri with a digital copy of Stark's mind guiding her? RDJ then just turns into Paul Bettany in the first couple of films. There'd be some differences, but it wouldn't diverge too much from things that have actually happened.

This is part of my "kill and replace Tony Stark" plan, but I'd still start with Rhodey becoming Iron Man for Avengers 5 and/or Captain Marvel 2.

I'd bring Riri Williams in as Ironheart with an "Invincible Iron Man" film that'd also feature Rhodey Iron Man and Pepper Potts as Rescue. But, I could also see a version of Avengers 5 (which I imagine being "Under Siege" with maybe a pinch of the Thunderbolts) fitting Riri's origin into its story. Or, maybe just make a Champions film for her that also uses Amadeus Cho as a Hulk.

Regardless, yeah, killing Tony and having RDJ voice an AI is a very logical next step for the MCU.

I’d still put my money on Tony surviving Avengers 4 and Steve dying.

    Could be both.

It would be fitting if they go out together. Tony wants to protect everyone and Cap is all about staying together and sees it as the source of their strength.

The final resolution between Tony and Steve being some heroic death side by side could certainly work quite well. In Charles Soule and Leinel Francis Yu's Civil War miniseries during Secret Wars (which, controversial opinion, was way better than the actual Civil War comic it played off of) did that and nailed the execution. I'd be fine with that ending.

I still maintain that a smarter and more narratively fulfilling angle would be Commander Steve Rogers in a Fury-esque role, though. Have him eulogize Stark, and have him become the authority that he has such a reverent-yet-messy relationship with.

That... would not be a good fit, lol. But, hey, if I were stuck in the midst of all this press junket stuff for a Marvel film, I'd also totally propose some silly idea for a project for blogs to take too seriously.

If a Black Widow movie does finally happen after Avengers 4, my dream pick is still Lexi Alexander. As for Taika Waititi, I could totally see him going small again after Ragnarok, but then getting pulled back in with whatever the next cosmic film is after James Gunn wraps up his GOTG trilogy. Maybe like an Adam Warlock/Infinity Watch-type film or something.

I would like to helm a solo Black Widow movie, too. And it would certainly not be a comedy.

  17. I can't believe we never got a Black Widow movie in the earlier phases. We can get movies like Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow, but we couldn't get a Black Widow movie before those?

Depending on what happens after Avengers 4, Marvel Studios might have missed the best opportunity for a Black Widow film (which I think would have been before/after Winter Solider or before Civil War). We'll have new films for the recent superheroes (Ant-Man 3, Strange 2, Spider-Man 2, Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, Guardians 3) and apparently more cosmic films. I don't know where a solo Black Widow film could fit in that schedule.

The second Spider-Man film comes out the same summer as Avengers 4. Though, I bet the third one ends up being in 2021.

A Black Widow film would be a nice fit for 2020. They'll need something more grounded to balance Infinity War and Avengers 4 back-to-back, as well as something decently fresh and different. With the Guardians being in these two Avengers films, they might decide to wait an extra year before GOTG3. Black Panther 2 and Doctor Strange 2 would fit nicely that year, but if they maintain 3-per-year, Black Widow would be a nice third one.

Would a prequel before avengers work for Black Widow? Her past seems interesting and even have a Hawkeye cameo :-)

Wouldn't work without years of the Avengers and X-Men in the same world. And, while I'm a big fan of the comic, it's not really one of my top dream stories to see on the big screen.

The event I'd be most hyped for, if Marvel ever had the proper rights to pull it off (or found fitting character replacements, though it wouldn't be the same without the Fantastic Four at the core) is Hickman's Secret Wars. It'd be hard to pull off, but it'd be so cool and epic if done right.

Comparing films that were made outside of Marvel studios to films made within marvel studios doesn’t make sense. Marvel wanted to follow specific arcs. Including Black Widow in films in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 gave her much more screen time than atomic blonde of red sparrow (in case you still want to compare to the two.

Oh great, it's the whole "Marvel always had a plan" argument, even though we have clear, public evidence of their plans changing.
