Word is Ant-Man needed to make 600 million to break even, which I think is more a sign of unreasonable expectations than anything else.
Other Ant Man movies have hit $600 million. 600 barely cracks the top-200 grossing movies at this point.
It feels weird to argue that Quantumania wasn’t actually a flop. Feels like a pretty obvious dud, even if it wasn’t, like, the biggest bomb of all time or whatever.
I typed up a post trying to clarify my stance on the Ant-Man thing and in my research I found something far more interesting. All three Ant-Man films have made roughly the same amount of money domestically. It's internationally where things get dire. Ant-Man - 180.2 million domestically, 339.1 million internationally Ant-Man 2 - 216 million domestically, 406 million internationally Ant-Man 3 - 214 million domestically, 261.6 million internationally The disconnect for me has always been that it's a top 10 movie here, which I know still doesn't mean anything if more people needed to see it to make back the investment, but looking at these numbers makes me think the problem wasn't here, but elsewhere. So what happened?
The story and characters were a mess. It had the highest opening weekend for an Antman film by far and still had a lower domestic gross than Antman 2. People who saw it opening weekend didn’t care to see it again and told others not to see it.
Yeah the hero that did breaking & entering had to start being involved in universe saving stuff in the 3rd one
I mean, yes, there was a lower domestic gross, but not by that much. I'm talking about the international gross, that's where it took the real hit. I'm wondering why it performed so badly internationally vs. domestically.
I'd have to research, but just off the top of my head, I know China missed a few films for various reasons. Doesn't China make up a good portion of the international box office?
More than a good portion......a movie cam bomba here in the US and literally be saved by China lol. So yeah....having to please their ratings boards can be a tough dilemma to be in.
I'm actually now curious to know just how many MCU movies owe making their money back to China. It's an interesting thought.
Ok I may have over estimated how much they made there it seems BUT they do still pander to the regulators over there to ensure it even gets released. Marvel Studios has been shut out of China this year and box-office data shows how much it's hurt the MCU Also I forgot there was like a period of 3 to 4 years MCU didn't release ANYTHING over there. Below link also has a graph it won't let me link directly to it post it here for some reason. Marvel movies are set to return to China, but Covid could weigh on ticket sales
China still pulls in a lot of money. Marvel movies as a whole are not very popular for their quality, but it’s either western blockbusters or propaganda revisionist war films (that a lot of citizens don’t really fall for) for them. Take whatever variety you can get.
One episode away from catching up on Ms. Marvel and I really hope Disney keeps pushing the TV format so we get more stuff like this. While I can see where you could cut parts and plot elements out to get a film length, I think you lose a lot of character moments and world building that way, and six episodes is not a big ask for a viewing commitment.
