oh haha, I never read the series but thought they just placed him in a captain America outfit with shield and dropped the wings. Well then.
I feel like this is the origin story for Davjs: Sam Wilson Cap Advocate. Next time I'm trying to explain why Sam Wilson would make a great Cap, if they're not understanding why getting people who aren't white dudes in those roles matters, I should just say, "Imagine if Anthony Mackie had both wings AND a shield!" No one can say no to that.
Not sure if I should put this here or what, but Sony announced a release date for Venom. Rumors are that it won't be connected to the MCU so idk what Sony is doing.
Sony's Venom Film is a Go, Gets 2018 Release Date October 5, 2018. (That's not long before the animated Miles film... lol.) Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner writing, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing, no director or other information yet. Part of me wants them to later add Kevin Feige as a producer and set this in the MCU, but another part of me would really love this to be separate from the MCU and darker than their brand would want to go. I mean, we already have Spider-Man: Homecoming (hopefully) nailing the Marvel formula approach and the Miles Morales film (probably) nailing animation. As an avid Spider-Man fan, I'm all about a third Spidey-related franchise that leans into a gritty Todd McFarlane aesthetic. ALL OF THE SPIDER-MAN.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I have a ton of Todd Mcfarlane and Erik Larson Spiderman issues from back in the day when I would go into shops as a kid and just buy comics out of order based on the cover. Def a more darker take a Spiderman, but that seems to have been the 90s.
Yeah, the 90s were... rough for comics, lol, but also produced a lot of cool stuff, which included the McFarlane Spider-Man. Loved his Lizard story, "Torment." I think his work set a good template for a creepy Spider-Man-adjacent franchise.
It was strange looking back, but in the moment as a kid I loved 90's comics lol. The Savage Dragon was one of my first comics that I loved, so when I found out Larson did some Spiderman runs (instantly knew it was him from his art style) I was really happy. It now made since that Doc Oct had machine guns since he was involved lol.
I'm in the minority that doesn't actually like Erik Larson that much, lol. His Sinister Six story was super cool, but he's always felt like a lesser McFarlane on Spider-Man to me. But, yeah, his Doc Ock was rad, lol. It's also impressive that, to this day, he still writes and illustrates Savage Dragon.
Yeah his sinister 6 story is cool, totally his style to have them all using guns and for Spidey to have a metal arm. He always was a lesser McFarlane lol, but it is super cool that he is still doing SD even though I dropped off years and years ago.
In addition to Venom, Sony's also trying to get a Black Cat/Silver Sable movie going for their Spidey-less Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. 'Spider-Man' Spinoff: 'Thor' Writer Tackling Silver Sable, Black Cat Movie (Exclusive)
Weirdest choice, by Sony so far, but with Christopher Yost working on the script (which Lisa Joy started a few years ago), this could be really cool. Highest chance of failure here, but also a lot of potential. Plus, more female fronted comic book films is ALWAYS a good thing, full stop.
I'm going to go ahead and dismiss it before anymore details come out. Give me super-spy Aunt May or give me death.
I really hate that the Sony Spider-Man spin off films won't be connected to the MCU. Not having Venom and Black Cat in the MCU is lame. I have a filling that Sony making spin-off films on Spider-Man secondary characters will ultimately kill my hopes and dreams of an MCU Sinister Six film.
Spidey has an enomorous rogues gallery that can easy fuel multiple franchises, though. You could make a darker franchise out of Venom, Carnage, Lizard, Morbius, etc., make a spy/heist franchise out of Black Cat, Silver Sable, Chameleon, etc., and still have Vulture, Shocker, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Kraven, Mysterious, Sandman, Boomerang, Prowler, Scorpion, Jackal, Kaine, Beetle, Electro, Rhino, etc. left for the MCU. (And, the animated film is a different enough beast to not really be a factor for the others.) And, that's assuming these spinoffs are successful enough to earn sequels that use further pieces of the Spider-Man property. I could see Venom not using anything outside of the symbiotes and Silver Sable/Black Cat not expanding beyond those two characters in one standalone film. Plus, if the MCU plans on existing for a long time, you still have time to use these characters independently, then reimagined for the MCU. No reason you can't do a live action Miles, a Flash Thompson Venom, and/or a modified Black Cat in the MCU a decade from now.
The main thing that has me concerned with the films not being connected to the MCU is Spider-Man himself. A heist movie like you stated could work for a couple characters without Spider-Man, but if they don't include him in a film about Venom and the symbiote then it has me worried.
In spite of being defined for years by his obsession with Spider-Man, Eddie Brock's story actually can work rather well without Spidey. Lean into his relationship (or lack thereof) with his father, as well as his failed marriage. Do the whole "Sin Eater" article failure thing, but don't have it be Spidey who exposed the real killer. Maybe even work Cletus Kassidy into that Sin Eater story so that he more organically fits into the story as a villain. Also lean into Brock's Catholic faith a la Daredevil. If you're wondering about "why" more than "how," look at it this way: They can probably embrace Venom's darkness more in a standalone film than a Spidey film. If said film works, you could always make a sequel with a Lizard inspired by "Torment" with a touch of "Shed." Just dedicate this franchise to the darker side of Spidey's history.
What you mentioned would work, but if the Venom movie is a success I would place money on Sony adapting Carnage into the sequel. That film would be destined for failure, especially with a PG-13 rating, which I assume will be the rating Sony will target their films for.
If Sony is going for a traditional comic book movie structure with a clear "supervillain," Carnage being that villain for that first film seems like forgone conclusion. Who else would they use? And, if we can have a good PG-13 Joker, why can't we have a good PG-13 Carnage? Though, I'm also a proponent of an R-rated Venom film, if that's even something Sony is allowed and willing to do, lol.
So can Sony not use the MCU Spider-Man in their films? I don't think I realised that was part of the agreement.
Technically Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of their films. What seems to be happening here is that, in addition to the Spider-Man films produced by Kevin Feige and set within his Marvel Studios vision, Sony wants to use their character rights to make their own comic book films not limited to the happenings of the MCU.
I figure the successes of deadpool and Logan would make more studios willing to try out r-rated Superhero movies. Venom def seems possible
I think I had assumed Spider-Man could appear in their own films but they weren't anything to do with the MCU. But I guess they would be if he was in it.
Perhaps Tom Holland could still be in the films. Last November in an interview he stated that he had signed onto 3 solo movies and 3 "spider-man" films. Perhaps the solo films are the MCU Spider-Man films while the "spider-man films" are the spin-offs that Sony is making.
