looks like it’s going to set a new all-time Labor Day weekend opening record

Yeah Shang-Chi is definitely passing the record that the 2007 Halloween set. Early box office weekend estimates jumped from $40 to $60 million.

  4. I definitely don't want to discredit the movie (especially as I haven't even seen it) and really this is just to kind of gauge how you all think Marvel will interpret it's release success, but taking a look at the box office records for Labor Day there are some pretty rough movies on that list. The top 5 right now are 2007's Halloween, The Possession, Transporter 2, One Direction: This Is Us and Jeepers Creepers 2.

Even if it does break the record, do you think that Marvel would consider that enough of a success for this film in particular to stay strong with theater only releases?

I'm not sure how accurate the numbers are but it looks like Black Widow may have had an $80 million opening weekend. Obviously we were seemingly in a slightly better place COVID wise and it was the first Marvel movie in 2 years, but it was also a prequel for a character now dead in the series.

Again, I'm probably not doing a great job of articulating how much of this is curiosity and definitely not a desire to put this film down - I'm just curious to see what you folks think about the future state of movie releases.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I would fucking love if they stuck with digital and theatrical combined release because Australia is in a lockdown that's not anywhere in sight of ending and I will 100% have these movies spoiled somehow before the 45-day window is up but I know these companies don't give a shit about anywhere other than America and China so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

With Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and Eternals not showing in China, I really hope Marvel just doesn’t put much effort in future China releases. The less dependent Hollywood is on China, the better.

Honestly, they should just make a show. It’s clear they’re not very good at making the movies. It seems like they’re tv casting is way better than movies, just want a believable scott summers for once.

It’s clear *FOX* wasn’t really good at making X-men movies. Though, I will admit First Class, Days of Future Past and Logan were good.

Would be well down for a Disney+ show or shows spinning out from a main movie franchise. Imagine something like The New Mutants but done over 6 episodes by a showrunner who cares about the material.

Imo, Logan was good, the other two were fine but overall, them trying different movies with a similar stale formula over and over again just feels tired. Wouldn’t mind an origins show that leads up to an xmen series either, I’m sure that would just end up becoming like three seasons of wolverine lol just slow it all down, make the stories matter and get people excited for the franchise again.

Having both movies and shows be canon is the perfect medium for an X-Men adaptation. Have the main team in the movies and then let New Mutants, X-Factor, X-Force or whatever else be Disney+ shows.

We don’t need a bunch of X-teams right off the bat, tbh. I’m very pro starting with “the X-Men” being a thing that already existed for years at the margins, but we don’t need to go straight into the modern era where there are a half dozen or so major teams.

Start with a Dazzler series on Disney+, with the Hellfire Club as the villains (and with a dope ass pop song written by legit songwriters for each episode). Season one ends with her coming out as a mutant and the backlash.

Then do a Wolverine series on Disney+. Logan’s in Madripoor, hanging out at the Princess Bar with Tyger Tiger (but not called that, ‘cause, “tiger lady”… *cringe*). Let my girl Karma and her evil family member be part of the story, too. Hellfire Club is a presence, but not as directly as in Dazzler.

Then… The Uncanny X-Men film. Logan’s there, but because he has his Disney+ adventures, he gets to be the badass supporting character he should be, not the protagonist. Storm is team leader. Either Kitty Pryde (if they’ll honor her being a Jewish bisexual) or Jubilee is the point-of-view entry point for the story. (And, let’s put Polaris here, too!) Revolves around conflict between the Xavier Institute, the Morlocks (including Callisto & Marrow), and the Purifiers. Credits tease that the sequel is where Hellfire plot crescendos.

By the way… Charles Xavier is already (believed) dead. So is Magneto (unless he’s retired and revealed to have watched over the Maximoff twins at some point, so you have that family dynamic organically retconned in). Cyclops is already retired, because Jean died. Because this is the X-Men, those characters can still show up eventually… but, we need to move on from Charles & Erik for now, and don’t need another Dark Phoenix direct adaptation. Instead…

X-Factor, the Disney+ series. Not the original X-Men: having an all-white X-team is BAD, and race-bending mutants in Marvel’s current synergistic model instead of giving characters like Monet and Rictor a push is also BAD. But, also not directly X-Factor Investigations, which has aged terribly. An amalgamation of every version. THIS is where Scott’s team leader, alongside a fun mix like, I dunno… Northstar, Rictor, Monet, Prodigy, Wolfsbane… there are options. Also, Scott meets a familiar redhead named Madelyn Pryor… :chin:

Though, X-Factor could have a flashback episode where we see Xavier, Scott, Jean, Storm, etc., against Magneto. And, Moira McTaggert is there, too… :chin:

(Can you tell I think too much about the X-Men these days?)

I just don’t see any reality where the x-men are introduced in the MCU and they don’t focus on Magneto, Xavier, Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, Jean. Etc. Feige and Company finally have these characters in their sandbox. Let them play in whatever story is being built in the MCU.

I kind of dislike the idea of an X-Men film without Cyclops, just because besides being such a major part of the team, he's also never really had a fair shake in the films, due to Wolverine Syndrome.

I think it is absolutely possible to have Wolverine in a movie and not have him be the main character, and I think because people already know who Wolverine is, you don't necessarily need a TV show to justify it. Although, I do agree it would be cool to have a Wolverine solo show, because he does have such an extensive history that would be worth covering apart from the X-Men.

I also don't know about the Hellfire Club being such a prominent villain. I mean, the idea of a bunch of shadowy rich people making decisions for the world kind of feels like a not so great idea right now. Also, I've personally just never really cared for them.

But, I also don't know who would be a reasonable main villain for a first movie. Characters like Apocalypse and Mister Sinister feel like they have too much baggage to be good for a first movie, and characters like Juggernaut and the Shadow King are too personal to particular characters. Magneto is really the only logical choice, unless you want to go deeper cut with someone like John Sublime.

Or, I guess it could go like this: Have the first villains be the Brotherhood, like Mystique, Pyro, Blob, etc., but don't even introduce Magneto. Let him be like... I dunno, in the background, or hinted at, or something. Magneto didn't even have to do with the Brotherhood in the comics originally, anyway. Then, have the second movie introduce the Sentinels as a reaction to mutants. Bring in Master Mold, maybe start some threads that could lead to Bastion in the future. Then maybe reintroduce Magneto as a reaction to the Sentinels.

I think if you're going to introduce mutants to the MCU, it makes sense to start with Xavier, just because he's such a key figure to the whole mutant-human relations thing. Have Xavier be like a rights leader, but not reveal that he's actually a mutant himself. Form the school as a sanctuary for mutants, just like in the comics. Form the X-Men as ambassadors.

I dunno, I guess I'm just very much into the classic nature of the X-Men. As fascinating as I think their current turn in comics is with the whole nation and resurrection thing, I really hope they don't do that for the movies.

I buy them "side-lining" Xavier, Magneto, and Wolverine in the actual X-Men movies. I can see Wolverine kind of getting the MCU Spidey treatment and having him run in with other MCU characters in his own series, but yeah I don't see the main X-Men movie not including someone like Scott or Jean.
