This casting, along with Maslany, and possibly Steinfeld, just reinforces the fact that these characters will most definitely be crossing over with the films, if anyone was in doubt of that. I had my doubts, but I'm becoming more and more confident.
Well, by Halakha, he wouldn't even be labeled as a Jewish actor because his Jewish heritage is not from his mother's side. I'm just surprised Marvel didn't try to get someone who at least had a Jewish upbringing.
He was talking about the sir name of Isaac coming from his father’s Jewish side. Very different than him claiming his identity as Jewish, which the article doesn’t quote. But whatever. This talk of Jewish heritage based on actual Jewish law won’t get anywhere.
You should know that you’re debating the Jewishness of an actor with someone who’s pretty vocal about his own Jewish identity, not someone speaking hypothetically.
Does “Jewish by heritage” not count or something? If so I have a lot more questions about my own identity
I didn’t know that. I’m not attempting to question Phaynes’ Jewish identity. That’s not what the conversation was and I wouldn’t have thought to even question his identity if he mentioned it.
Depends on who you ask, of course, but the Jewish law (Halakha) wouldn’t consider it so unless it’s from the mother’s side. You wouldn’t even be able to get Israeli citizenship if you said your heritage was strictly from your father’s side. There are non-orthodox denominations that believe someone’s heritage should be recognized if it’s only from their father, though. With Marc’s heritage being orthodox in the comics I just assumed that Marvel would get an actor that went by or experienced orthodox Jewish tradition.
You know conversations about representation in media have gone off the rails when it leads to this kinda splitting hairs over who really is & isn’t [identity]. The topics of representation, whitewashing, erasure, colorism, appropriation, etc., matter. But, discussing whether or not a Moon Knight actor is Jewish enough, in a way that also feels like it’s calling into question real people’s identities, is... at the very least, (as the kids say) a bad look.
You're right. I was too concerned with typing out legalities of heritage without thinking of how distasteful it might have looked. My apologies to anyone who took offense.
i would say if we're limiting it to orthodox jews only, to match in line with marc's heritage, you might as well not make the movie, since the number of orthodox Jewish actors of any sort of mainstream popularity is basically nil if you're accepting that it doesn't have to be someone who is the exact same strand of Judaism as the character, like you yourself said @justin. there are strands of Judaism where it doesn't matter which parent passes down the heritage. and, furthermore, where you can claim heritage regardless of your parents, even though oscar as he said has a Jewish parent and identifies with Judaism from a heritage standpoint. so, yeah, like I said ... i don't think it really matters haha but, I also was on the record saying I would have been fine with keanu, who isn't Jewish at all, and don't really care if they went for a Jewish actor, so idk
My preferred Marvel casting is when they either take a chance on someone (RDJ, Ruffalo you could argue maybe?) or take people on the cusp (Pratt, Holland, Boseman), which is good for younger or up and coming actors, giving them a profile and leverage to potentially go into more interesting stuff (or, in the case of Chris Pratt and maybe Tom Holland, somehow even more boring stuff than the MCU). I don’t love when an established, legitimately great actor signs up because I’d much rather see them do other stuff.
Not all the cast, but some of The Eternals could be considered up-and-comers and will be unknown to a lot of people too.
Up until Nanjiani was announced, I thought he was just a comedian. I’ve never watched any of his stuff and only recognized him from (usually) comedic tweets.
I think I care more at this point about what directors Marvel can bring in than what actors. I love that they have the power to elevate people in the public eye & also support established people getting to play around a little bit, but if the movies aren’t fun & exciting, it doesn’t really matter. Which, on that note, oh my gosh do I wanna see what a Chloé Zhao Marvel film looks like.
