If we view mutants as a pulpy science fiction analogy for queerness (which is one of the more popular uses of the property in recent decades & one I’m personally quite fond of because [redacted])... Then, “people like them have always existed, but they feel like a brand new, growing group of people to the public right now” really isn’t a big stretch.
Well, Namor wasn’t originally a mutant he was retconned into one well after his first appearance. Also just because individual mutants have been able to hide their powers/identities doesn’t mean every single mutant can. What about the ones whose physical appearance permanently changes? You wouldn’t be able to tell Wolverine is a mutant just by looking at him (that’s part of the metaphor btw). And doing a mind wipe on such a grand scale every single day, even with Cerebro, would take a big physical toll on Professor X. It’s not a stretch to say that he probably wouldn’t be able to do that. The “snap activating latent mutant genes” theory solves these problems though, which is why I like it.
Idk, from watching Logan, Professor X's powers seemed to be pretty scary powerful. If he can wipe out nearly every mutant on the planet (probably without Cerebro) when he's well beyond his physical and mental peak, I'd imagine a young Professor X could do a lot But, again, I don't know the comics
A. Again, much like the comics, who's to say there simply WEREN'T mutants like that in the past? Or at least ones that weren't documented. B. If you're gonna argue that's too unrealistic (which I could see even if I disagree), it's not even the slightest bit of a stretch for governments/special interest groups to try and cover that up/experiment on them to see what makes them mutants. Let that be the lead-in for Weapon X. Literally only you are saying he'd have to do a daily global scale mindwipe. There aren't new mutants who can't control/hide their mutations every day, and again, you REALLY think the governments/military agencies (especially in the MCU when Hydra was part of SHIELD since its inception) would just let that kind of thing run wild. There would be conspiracy theories and speculation, sure, but the idea that those forces wouldn't at least TRY to cover up mutants so they could experiment on them is wild to me.
Pretty sure it was just the X-Men. There were chemicals in corn syrup that negated the x-gene or something like that, which is why there were really no other mutants
I could see SHIELD capturing mutants. They seemed to love doing that shit to superheroes in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics (In fact, they may have done that with Kitty Pryde in those comics.. don't totally remember)
I guess I should also clarify I don't think it's unreasonable for the snaps to have had some effect on the mutant population. Pretty sure I even said WAY back when we first had this discussion that having something like "there were always SOME mutants, but the snaps just speed up the rate at which mutants are appearing" would be fine. It's not my ideal scenario but it's far easier to stomach than "without the stones/the snaps, mutants just wouldn't exist at all"
Here’s a random quote by the writer of my favorite X-Men comics, which I’m sharing for no particular reason:
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Just give me a X-men movie where cyclops is the general, storm is second in command, and Wolverine is the wildcard. Let’s start from there. Get me close to the cartoon
Technically he doesn’t anymore, lol, after a meltdown in I think one of the unpopular opinion threads? Which, it was only a matter of time.
Mutants with physical transformations are the Bigfoot’s of the MCU. Boom. Bigfoot for Blue team leader.
Most hyped future mcu films? Let’s go Spider-Man 3 Doctor Strange 2 Thor 4 Shang-Chi Black Widow The Eternals Blade and GOTG3 are up there who knows when they’re coming out and we barely know anything about Antman 3, BP 2 and Captain Marvel 2.
Multiverse of Madness Love and Thunder SM3 Shang-Chi The Eternals Black Widow *D+ Bonus Round* Ms. Marvel WandaVision Moon Knight She Hulk Loki The Falcon and the Winter Soldier What If?
For Disney+ it is WandaVision Falcon & Winter Soldier Loki What If? Hawkeye Moon Knight Ms Marvel She Hulk
Thor, Eternals, and Shang-Chi are the movies I’m most looking forward to. Thor because Taika, and the other two because they’re going to shake things up both in front of and behind the camera. The MCU needs that.
The only Marvel Studios films I’m actively excited for at the moment are Eternals (Chloé Zhao), Thor: Love & Thunder (Taika Waititi), & Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Sam Raimi). Oh, & whenever James Gunn gets around to the next Guardians film. The rest seems like just more Marvel stuff that I’m sure I’ll enjoy eventually, but that has no hook for me yet. On the Disney+ side, just Ms Marvel (‘cause Kamala Khan is the one character whose series I’ve consistently followed for the past 6 yrs) & WandaVision (‘cause I love those characters & think the series looks wonderfully weird). The rest I would surely enjoy, but I don’t need that much Marvel Studios in my life. If you count Sony, then Venom: Let There Be Carnage is up there as well. Gonna be a blast. Obviously the Spider-Verse sequel will be better than anything else we’re discussing. Olivia Wilde’s project could be dope, as could the Silk series. Curious what Kraven would be like if it happened. Zero confidence in Spidey 3 yet, but also obsessed with it ‘cause I’m dumb.
