Makes no sense. It has to be like the JJ Jameson scenario. Keep the actor in the role, but it's a new take from the ground up.
That would be such an odd choice unless some sort of Spiderverse shit is going to go down with a cameo of the ASM universe
I think they lost track of time back in March. They think it's April 1, rather than October 1. This is the only plausible explanation.
If it were reported literally anywhere besides THR, I wouldn’t believe it... and, I’m still not 100% sure that I do? lol. I’m famously a big defender of ASM2, which might be the least refined Spidey film but also has some of the highest highs. Electro, however, was not one of those highs for me. That being said, Jamie Foxx is a good actor. So, like, why not have him play a new version of the villain, especially after the Jameson precedent? (Not to mention recent DC choices & Fox’s infamously flexible continuity.) If this happens, I’d rather a recycled villain not be the main villain, but I’m fine with him giving it another go. Honestly, if they wanna establish a full, fleshed out Spider-Man rogues gallery, which is my favorite in comics & something I’ve always wanted fully realized on screen, this would be a fine way to get there. Take the shortcut of Thomas Haden Church as Sandman & Rhys Ifans as Lizard, too! Those characters aren’t major enough to need new origins, but are fun enough to be worth playing around with.
If you haven’t yet, you should read the original Kamala Khan Ms Marvel run. It’s collected in 10 volumes (or 5 oversized hardcover volumes), very easy to follow without anything else & very consistent. The writer, G Willow Wilson, & the editor, Sana Amanat, are both Muslims from New Jersey (though Wilson is white & converted to Islam later in life). So, while I myself am not from the region, I imagine it’s a pretty faithful depiction. And, it’s just good comics.
If he's taking a separate stab at the character, I think it's fine. But if he's playing the same Electro, somehow? It's a question which previously may have sounded asinine, but now I think is pretty plausible... Just please, no.
Yeah ASM2 is one of my favorite Spidey films and I'm also in the same boat of "Electro was not one of my favorite parts of that film" lol. I agree that if this is really happening, I hope he's trying for a different version of the character
It pretty much has to be a new incarnation of the character lol. I could definitely see Foxx wanting to make up for the travesty that was ASM2. But also Sony’s gonna Sony so don’t count anything out.
The more I think about it, the more my official stance is, “He’s not The Big Bad™; this film will have multiple characters from Spidey’s rogues gallery.” We don’t need any sort of explanation, like what this one’s origin is or spelling out on screen that it’s a different version, lol. He’s Electro. He has zappy powers & dislikes Spider-Man, & that’s that. My prediction is that there are multiple villains after Spidey, especially now that his “alleged” identity has been revealed. Not sure that it’ll be any sort of formalized “Sinister Six” (yet), just a bunch of criminals chasing this hero who’s made their lives difficult. And, I bet Toomes plays some kinda important role at some point.
Isn’t one of the reasons he played that version of electro because he didn’t want to wear electros more well-known costume?
nearly everything involving electro in asm2 made up a lot of the worst things in any spidey movie so i can only hope the character is at least getting a soft reboot of sorts at least. maybe this time there can be actual reasons given to root against him
Just saw some people on reddit mentioning that Shang-Chi has another version of the Mandarin, Thor 4 has another version of Thor, Strange 2 is dealing with the Multiverse head on, and now this has a villain that showed up in separate Spidey films. They theorized that this phase may be characters dealing with their own little multiverse bubble after whatever happens in WandaVision. Sounds a bit unlikely, but I wouldn't hate it.
Speaking only for myself, “that version” means more than just the look (though I do wish Marvel Studios had the guts to just put him in a version of that classic Ditko design). The whole cartoonish dork with awkward violent dream sequences & birthday stuff & cringey social interactions was rough. Ditch that stuff & just make him a fun, mean villain with cool electrical powers. Just keep it simple & comic-book-y. Though, yeah, if he & the studio doesn’t wanna do a version of that great classic design, something a little better than the ASM2 look would still be nice.
