Haha when you put it that way, that's a solid point XD

I still think it's pretty newsworthy taking into account that they almost didn't bother renewing this deal in the first place though. There's been a lot of uncertainty

It couldn’t have been for attention , to help bring in more people to make more money. No way

Large businesses have been known to make stupid decisions when they don't get their way, it's always a risk. But I agree there's a solid chance that's all it was in the first place, and I lean towards believing so

It a obvious why Sony wants to keep joint custody with Disney. They can’t make people think their films are in the MCU if Spider-Man stops showing up in the MCU.

I think it’s funny that this is still a conversation, tbh. Sony wants to maintain their only long term consistent money maker & not lose it. Giving up too much profit to Disney would do that; abandoning the Marvel Studios deal completely if they don’t have to & dealing w/ the bad PR from the Disney-obsessed internet could also do that.

Their current sweet spot of a Spider-Man franchise that’s lucrative enough to be worth sharing, plus free marketing via appearances in other Marvel Studios films, plus movies that share continuity w/ those Spider-Man films while also being 100% theirs, plus a critically acclaimed animated film franchise... is kind of a no brainer on a corporate level.

It’s a really a win for them. They can ride the marvel train and make money. And when it no longer makes sense to do so they can pull back. Why wouldn’t they do it

At this point I want to see a third Garfield film and I really hope they have the universes collide in a live action Spider Verse film.

Love to see the CEO of Disney continue to use an online fan narrative & a popular young actor as negociating tools against another movie studio, w/in a year of absorbing Fox. Just, really love to see it.

Totally looking forward to the next public negociation in a couple years, when dweebs online cheer for monopoly again.

    Assume It's A Bit

There are people still actually upset that Disney didn't get their initial deal of 50% of the box office and think Sony is being greedy so I'm very certain that the next deal will be Disney trying to just outright take Spider-Man from Sony.

I’m surprised Disney hasn’t tried to buy the complete rights back tbh

They probably have behind closed doors at one point, but Sony would be insane to sell

If I were Sony, I'd be working super hard on building a strong relationship w/ Tom Holland (who already has a strong relationshio w/ Bob Iger) & prepping a really attractive contract for if/when Disney pulls their next power move. If they can maintain that relationship going forward, they'll have a better footing to negociate from, especially if Venom 2 and/or the untitled Oct 2021 film (Spider-Woman?) are well recieved enough to break some of the (unfair) Sony stigma online.

I think if Sony is successful critically and financially with Venom 2/Morbius then it would help them but every film Sony releases from here on out that ties into the MCU will make it tougher for Sony when it comes to future deals. It makes Sony look like they rely on the MCU and not vice versa, but that’s what Sony gets from piggybacking off of the MCU.

    A (Cancelled) Dork Prestigious

The reporting that has come out was that Sony was willing to sell the rights for $10 billion. I think I read something about Disney countering with $5 billion but I'm not sure. For reference, Disney bought all of Lucasfilm for a little over $4 billion lol.

Although if Sony Pictures is purchased by Apple or Amazon like the rumors were swirling about last fall, then the rights revert back to Disney automatically for free so there's always that chance too.
