Writers can write anything. There’s a way to make it work. It’s just safer to reign them in and keep things uniform. (that’s why they aren’t cinema)
Taking stylistic/thematic risks won't (or I guess shouldn't) knock things off course for whatever plan Feige has in mind. The issue with the Star Wars sequels wasn't tonal inconsistencies or anything like that, it's that it felt like there was no clear plan for the story/characters and they were playing it by ear without any regard for the overall arc of the trilogy. Disney sees the MCU as a safe bet and doesn't want to take any chances with alienating people by deviating too far from the formula. Even Ragnarok and Guardians, which are pretty easily the most prominent examples of the directors getting to do what they want, align pretty well with the status quo. Doctor Strange 2 going a more horror-oriented route was the main reason I was excited for it. If they're gonna play it closer to the first one, I'm much more apathetic towards it.
Sacrificing good interesting movies and ideas for the safe and bland as long as they “fit an overarching story” sure makes my argument for why overarching stories at all cost is a baddddddd formula easy.
Legend has it that every time someone says the MCU isn’t cinema a cinephile mounts a Pulp Fiction and/or Goodfellas one-sheet on their wall.
To be fair to Marvel, at least they don’t hire someone to do what they do best, receive exactly what they hired that person to do, and then freak out and fire them with the film being 90% finished only to re-shoot the whole thing with someone else.
Maybe Disney/Marvel will hire him back like they did with Gunn. Finding a new director and getting the person ready when this shoots in March can’t be ideal
"Yo, Scott Derrickson is so metal! He did exactly what he thought was expected of him! Really sticking it to the man!"
This news hasn't really bothered me that much. I hate horror films and when they announced that the film would be a horror, I was a bit disappointed. Saying that, I don't think him leaving will have that much of an impact. This certainly isn't "Edgar Wright leave Ant-Man" levels of huge.
Disney can probably cobble together a marvel movie these days the same way Hans Zimmer can just score a movie with his army of interns.
Peyton Reed was hired a month beide Ant-Man began filming, but I feel like Doctor Strange ITMOM will be much more pre-production heavy
They’re not going to just up and add mutants to the MCU in a movie that they didn’t have creative control over lol
It could be a Venom situation. The film isn’t set in the MCU phases, but mcu characters could interact with those characters in future movies.
"There’s a seriously electrifying new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it comes in the form of the latest from Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment…“ Has to either be a gigantic typo or news of the film taking place in the MCU. I can’t imagine it being anything else.
I’m saying I think whoever drafted that email is being very cavalier with the term. More likely they meant “the Marvel film lineup” or something like that. Could be wrong but it would be truly bizarre for there to suddenly be mutants in the MCU without any explanation for how or why we’re only just learning about them now.
