This really sucks but at the same time idk this is just what the MCU is. It’s the trade-off you make so you don’t wind up with a Star Wars situation on your hands. Feige has a plan, if Derrickson’s vision for the film didn’t work within that plan then it wasn’t going to work out. Really starting to seem like Gunn and Waititi are the only ones who are able to make Marvel films without losing their own personal artistic style/vision in the process.
pathetic. pretty soon any director with original ideas is going to a) take the money and water their product down or b) get shitcanned. gross.
Disney wants the MCU to appeal to the widest audience so it’s not surprising they’d (assuming here) want to tone down on the spooky elements promised to keep up with that idea.
I genuinely think DC would be wildly successful if they just do the opposite of Marvel for movies. No insane interconnected universe with a rigid formula. Bring in arthouse directors to do their own batshit take on a superhero movie. It will probably be hit or miss, but it'll be interesting and you won't have creators handcuffed to the demands of a studio/team of producers.
Probably doesn’t hurt that Gunn and Waititi both have a comedic style that resonated with the masses, hence why the movies they made are some of the most popular.
Oh I’m totally with you on that, I was looking forward to this because I felt that the MCU was finally taking some chances away from the formula and doing something cool but alas.
Of course it doesn’t hurt, I’m just saying those movies unquestionably bear the stamp of their directors in a way that pretty much none of the other MCU movies do.
Look on the bright side: now Derrickson is free to make an original film instead of working on another franchise movie.
Man, now I’m thinking about DC and how there hasn’t been a good Green Lantern movie yet. I don’t know how they can’t do it, GL has one of the coolest universes in comics and the Emotional Spectrum is neat. Plus, put Dex-Starr in a movie and people would meme the shit outta him.
This severely damages the hype I had for this film. Doctor Strange is one of my favorite Marvel properties and Scott had a good vision for him. I have no doubts that he wanted to go full horror with the nightmare dimension and Feige didn’t agree. This doesn’t mean what Feige wants is bad but it also means we probably won’t see the real potential of this film.
DC has been on a relatively good streak with Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam, and Joker (polarizing as it is). I agree with the sentiment that they should get more auteur-type directors to do their thing with different properties instead of trying to compete with the Marvel Studios model.
yeah, that's fair. taika too. i guess it's more for out of the box filmmakers like derrickson here, edgar wright, Duvernay prior to Coogler taking BP, etc.
Yeah I’m far from defending Marvel, I think most of their movies stink and their uniform style and cohesive “storytelling” is bad. Coogler, Gunn, and Watiti managed to make something out of their opportunities though.
Scott is such a good director for Strange. This announcement is a big bummer. He is someone that actually believes and seeks out the supernatural. A handful of directors can make a good film about the Strange character but I can’t think of many that actually have a sincere interest and belief in spirit. Now that the horror aspect is most likely gone it’s safe to assume many of the good undertones of spirituality and mysticism will be absent.
This is for the better when it comes to the overall story, though. If Disney and Feige have a clear path in mind, it’s better that they don’t have a film that kind of knocks it off course or you’ll be stuck with something like the Star Wars sequel trilogy where the films don’t match.
