could be that both brothers need help with collaboration, seeing as Bronstein wrote this movie as well like the other Safdie Bros features (something that was missing from The Smashing Machine)
There are early screenings happening as soon as tomorrow in some cities that you can RSVP for - Marty Supreme - A24 Screening
I need to rewatch that and Friendship since its likely recency bias but this is really funny. Many insane jokes and one of the biggest laughs, from our whole audience, came at the very beginning. Also, as I was leaving I heard a guy refer to the movie as “pimp”. Is that back in Gen Z’s nomenclature because I don’t think I’ve heard used it in that way in at least 15 years lol.
Some general thoughts, no spoilers, but adding tags for those wanting to go in completely fresh. This is very much in the style of Uncut Gems and Good Time. It's highly focused on its main character, one that's similar to the main in those films, and is very kinetic due its camerawork, editing, performances, dialogue, and music. The music in particular is very similar to Uncut Gems (shout out 0PN) and is used in the same way, which is one of my favorite aspects of the Sadfie brother's style. This one felt less anxiety-inducing than both of the previous films and much funnier from the jump. I think Uncut Gems is very funny but the humor hit more during subsequent viewings of that one, at least for me. The side characters are a bit thin but I think that's just a result of it being so focused on Marty.
How much of the humor derives from it simply being a movie about ping-pong that they seem to be playing with deadpan sincerity/intensity?
there are definitely some jokes around it but most of the humor is from his back and forth with other characters as well as some visual gags. the actual ping pong scenes are all pretty exciting or tense imo.
this was completely unhinged and i was all for it. incredible movie, i am NOT taking it for granted that i saw it a month early
