Today I’m excited to share with everyone the new single from Norwegian singer-songwriter, Marte Eberson, “Start Over Again.” On this heartfelt track, Eberson blends breathtaking cinematic rock with an indie pop twist. Eberson reflected on the writing process of the new single and shared:

Sometimes I look at pictures from when I was younger—whether from my childhood, teenage years, or just a couple of years ago—and feel a sense of longing. A longing for a time when life felt less complicated, less stressful, and when my friends, my family, and I had more time. That time passed so quickly, and I wish I had realized how much I should have appreciated it. Suddenly, I’m ‘grown up,’ and I don’t know how it happened. The days and years blur together, everything moves faster and faster. It would be so nice to start over, to begin again, to savor that time more, to slow down and take it all in.

You mention looking at old photos and feeling a longing for a simpler time. Do you think this feeling of nostalgia influences a lot of your songwriting?

Yes, I’m probably very nostalgic. That’s what’s been a bit strange about meditating so much; the focus on the here and now, and not focusing so much on the past. But the past is always there and affects me a lot in the present. It could well be that I’m a bit hypersensitive. It doesn’t take much for me to suddenly be back in a moment from the past. Then it’s just like I remember an exact memory and everything that memory entails, it could be a smell, a sound, an image or a song. I know that I remember a lot from my childhood and adolescence, details from conversations and events, much more than what my friends remember. This certainly affects my music. I want my songs to evoke memories in my listeners. Whether it’s lines of lyrics, sounds or melodies. That the audience will also think “oh, this reminds me of..”

Are there any particular artists or influences that have shaped your sound for this song or the record as a whole?

I will always be inspired by the tone and melancholy of jazz. But on this record I have also been inspired by Carole King, Julie London, Mazzy Star, David Lynch and Bobby Winton. I probably have more older references as inspiration than new and modern music. I listen to old music the most.

What has been the most rewarding part of creating this upcoming album?

I’ve been really relaxed, but still inspired during the recording of this album. Producer Lars Voldsdal has a really calm way about him, and he is more concerned with the purpose of the song than with making a modern production. He is very good at clarifying the most important thing in the song itself; the story and the melody. It has been a nice journey to be focusing even more on this than I have done before. The music feels more authentic. It’s been like being in my living room making a record that feels like me. Just melodies and stories being told by me.
