This was heart wrenching. Specifically the last 15 or so minutes. Their argument in his apartment was so realistic and full of lies and regret. Powerful stuff. Loved it.
I don’t even know if I’ll ever want to watch this again. They really nailed a lot of what it’s like to go through a divorce. There’s confusion and pain and anger and frustration. And then you’re just hanging out shooting the shit about whatever with the person you love/d for over a decade because you have to take a break from the sadness and loss. I’ll be thinking about this one for a very long time.
i’m a little confused by that scene. is it meant to imply the son called the hospital or something for him?
interesting how what I keep coming back to is I hope Henry was getting he help he needed because he was too anxious to poop, and Nicole apparently gave him prizes for using the bathroom regularly, before his parents went through a nasty divorce
The kid finding the letter at the end, at that very moment, and reading it out loud for Adam Driver to hear was way too cutesy (I guess? Idk what word to use, neat?) to me. I also did not like the music that began to play as he began to cry. Did not fit and took me out of it
i really enjoyed how much alda’s character seemed to love charlie, like ruffling his hair talking about the genius grant and hugging him in the office. really well-written minor character.
the letter reading might have been a bit forced, but it was one of the more emotionally effecting scenes of the movie imo. especially with how driver portrayed it. critique randy newman at your own peril.
it was also realistic that two cool creative types would treat their kid like a friend almost, or at least on the same level like how Charlie was always watching old movies with him
the “i don’t watch tv” as the camera pans to the tv and then scarjo’s reaction really got a laugh out of me.
Oh absolutely, him reading the letter and the reaction was absolutely effective. But the mode with which he came across it felt cheap. The score was good, I just did not think it fit there
I like the knife scene. Fits with his character. He doesn’t think he’s hurting anyone but the blade is still out. Same with him being dressed as the invisible man/a ghost.
