Mark Hoppus talked with NME about the Fyre Festival disaster: “It was pretty shocking,” Hoppus told NME of his first viewing of the documentary. “It was shocking but not entirely surprising. We had indications kind of early on that there were problems. Our production crew was having problems getting even the most basic of answers as to staging, power and things that you would normally have well in advance of the show. That being said, us and our crew have always prided ourselves on being able to put on a good show. “If you give us electricity and a stage then we will do our best to put on a great show. We continued in good faith, the show got closer and closer. Travis [Barker, drums] doesn’t fly so he was going to have to get on a boat for several days to get there then our production crew just said, ‘I don’t think that this is going to happen, I think we should pull out now’. That’s when we issued our statement.” Expand - View Original
I could read about this story all day. I want to know more about the correspondence between the artists and the festival. If you liked the Fyre documentaries, The Inventor on HBO is great. I still don't understand why she's not in jail.
“Here's to living like all- stars, partying like rock stars, and fucking like porn stars." Billy McFarland is such a goon.
Interesting comments about Travis having to take a boat which would take DAYS. I say that because Blink issued a statement that they wouldn’t be playing the day before the event started (which I would assume would be the day or two before they would play). Basically, I’ve always felt they should have announced that they weren’t attending sooner. Their internal team, like Mark kind of said, should have seen the red flags and made a determination sooner. Probably wouldn’t have stopped anyone from going though. People had more than enough other red flags to not attend that shit show lol
Both were well worth watching, I liked the Netflix one better. The actual footage of McFarland was worth more than his nothing interview in the Hulu one, hilarious that he actually let himself be filmed doing his ticket scam afterwards. Netflix had more on the people it affected too. I did like the part where Hulu made the social media influencers look like idiots
Plane crash man. I can't blame him. He's got to have PTSD and would have severe panic attacks the entire time if he ever flew again.
I don't think he is having a go at Travis, more they canceled with one day's notice. It would have taken several days on a boat. So either: they knew it wasn't happening days before they canceled or Travis was on a boat that did a u-turn.
Both are good in their own way and compliment each other. But be aware that the Netflix one was made by the company in charge of PR for the festival. The Hulu one goes after them hard.
@himynameisiain said it perfectly for me. wasn't taking a dig at Travis not flying (understand that 100%) it was moreso the timing of the cancelling and how long it would take for them to get there / get set up. but again - if they would have cancelled that would have maybe stopped like 10 people from going. there were so many warning signs for why no one should have gone
I get why people say that, but despite the PR company being one of the producers, they go after themselves pretty hard, and don't pull any punches about how big of a disaster the event was. But maybe I say that as someone who is much more willing to blame the corrupt and incompetent event organizers, than the people who were just doing their job and successfully sold it.
netflix was way more entertaining but i feel like hulu was less biased. didn't fuckjerry help produce the netflix one?
They did. But that's a double-edged sword, because the only reason they had so much access to the employees for interviews and video footage was because of them - and that was a huge part of the insight and entertainment of the doc. I posted above about it too, but I guess I'm less bitter towards the people who came up with a successful marketing and social media campaign, and much more angry towards the people who were responsible for, and failed to deliver the promised event.
