How I read this

 

it was intentional

 

-First half especially is stacked.
-"All My Favorite People" is a goddamn jam and is headed straight for my summer playlist this year.
-This album is definitely not "Maren goes pop." Still a lot of country influence here (especially on "All My Favorite People," which is the Brothers Osborne duet and has an absolutely ripping guitar part), and the more "pop" parts are really R&B by way of country. Definitely sounds like there is some Beyonce influence in the middle of the record.
-The weakest two tracks on the record, "Gold Love" and "Great Ones," are unfortunately back to back in the middle of the record. So, it loses steam a bit more than Hero did. Hoping those two grow on me.
-On first blush, I don't think the hooks are QUITE as strong as they were on Hero, but that's one of the catchiest records of the decade, imo.

 

the bones is one of my favorite songs this year

 

Hmmmm All My Favorite People didn't really resonate with me on first listen and I actually thought Great Ones was pretty good, to each their own huh

 

The former is her most overtly country song to date and I’m a big fan of Brothers Osborne, so it was an easy sell for me. “Great Ones” isn’t bad, but falls into the “generic country-pop-R&B” hybrid category that is really big on country radio right now. I also think it has pretty bland lyrical work, which is not something I expect from her.
