I think these are valid criticisms, things I also noticed. Would have liked to get one more Kenny scene just to see the impact on the family of the victim, rather than mostly focused on the family of the culprit.
An interesting enough twist but the path to get there was fucking insane lol the old dude doesn’t remember calling Mare to come over when she knocks on his door but remembers exactly when his gun was/wasn’t there?? the scene of Mare opening the door and the mom and her kid in embrace was moving, I wish they would’ve locked in on that more- the cut to them questioning the kid (really did not like the acting in this scene. I don’t think Nicholson did all that good of a job tbh) was jarring and really took some of the emotional weight away Overall, the show really lacked nuance in handling what I felt were pretty interesting themes. Familial bonds, small town history etc. They tried to do too much at once and really couldn’t juggle it all. I cared very little about most of the characters in the show, and I felt that it spent far too much time on seemingly meaningless plotlines (especially since the writing was not strong enough to make them worth that much time) I’ve talked enough about the super awkward shift in tone throughout the episodes but it happened again in this one. Just left me pretty cold all around aside from the Zabel ep, which had a masterful ending.
Yeah I think a second season would be too much. I do wish they had spent a little more time sitting with the idea that this was carried out by a family that Mare was super close to. Other than that I think they did a good job of showing that you don’t process anything overnight and everything takes time
Also don’t feel like the show spent enough time with how completely fucked up it was that they dragged Billy into it and were trying to pin the entire thing on him but it’s not like his hands were totally clean
Right? Felt like that completely went away. The last ep rushed through so much after so many wasted minutes in earlier eps
I’d give the ending a B+. I thought the explanation for the murder itself was a bit flimsy but I loved most of how they got there, tbh. I’d also give credit for a more satisfactory tying up of loose ends than I expected. The only truly glaring one is the Dylan stuff - that diversion into him threatening the best friend is borderline nonsensical now. But overall I thought it was a pretty great show. I’d be fine with or without a season 2 - much of what made this season great was the character stuff and you could only do so much more of that before it descends into parody. But give me a reasonable explanation for why Mare would be the point person on a big case (that isn’t just that a lot of terrible shit happens in Easttown) and I’m sure Winslet could sell it enough to be worth another 7 episodes.
i know they said dylan was after the journals and chasing jess bc he wanted his family to keep DJ but we never got an answer where he was the night she died, right?
This was pretty good, but I felt like the drama was too over the top. The Dylan storyline went nowhere, and overall, they went out of their way to make everyone seem like a suspect. I live in Phoenixville, pa, and a lot of this was filmed nearby. Besides east town, most of the landmarks/towns are real places, so the absurd amount of drama was very distracting. They even used the actual packaging for store-brand food that was in Mares freezer, haha. Idk, it seemed odd that they would use so much detail for something most people wouldn’t know, and it took me out of it. A critique most people won’t have.
All of the local food and drink props were legit and the beer preferences and local food and snack choices were mostly scripted The Stories Behind Mare of Easttown’s Most Memorable Edible Moments
Yeah people around Delco drinking Yuengling and Rolling Rock is pretty damn on brand. Did we see Lionshead? surprised if we didn't. It's brewed in Wilkes-Berre but definitely a very delco beer lol Also holy shit that link says Mare's sandwhich from the first episode is from Tom Jones' Diner. That place is the shiiiit. I mean, it's not really anything special but it's a 24 hour diner that me and my friends would sometimes drive up to if we didn't wanna hit the one 24 hour diner around here.
Rectify is still so underrated. If only it got more attention, but it had no big names to draw people to it.
Binged this on Sunday and Monday night. Really enjoyed it. Given all the twists and turns with suspects and whatnot, I think my biggest surprise of the series was that Frank had nothing to do with it. I kind of suspected him from the beginning or at the very least, thought that he knew the truth or had something to do with it. Also, I need more Guy Pearce in my life - and Kate and Jean killed it throughout the entire season.
the way they namedropped so so many specific places and town names in the phl/delco area every other line of dialogue was like borderline snl sketch to me lol I liked the show overall though
