Today is a great day to share the latest single and video from Mappe Of, called “Terraforming Moons.” On this vibrant new single, Mappe Of showcases crisp songwriting in the same narrative of a sci-fi future where human society has collapsed. The final single from Mappe Of’s forthcoming LP, Afterglades, keeps interest high in the new record that will be released on September 19th via Paper Bag Records.

Afterglades is described as a sci-fi-folk meditation on the end of the world. What drew you to that combination of genre and theme?

The sci-fi component is just something I’ve been drawn to aesthetically for a long time, and has been evoked in some of my favourite records from the 70s prog and experimental electronic worlds, so it felt natural to explore that direction. The apocalyptic theme developed as a backdrop that provided the necessary conditions for this story I wanted to tell, about how people carry out their days and find ways to live and love amidst impending doom.

“Terraforming Moons” explores the lengths we go to for the people we love. How did your personal experiences shape the emotional tone of the track?

My wife was sick for a long time, starting just prior to COVID and carrying on for a couple years before we started to find answers. It’s a very frustrating experience, feeling like a bystander while someone you love is experiencing all of this pain. You do what you can to take care of them, of course, but it never feels like enough. This song is sort of an imaginative reconstruction of that feeling in a sci-fi context, exploring the idea of going to the lengths of terraforming a world in order to create conditions for your loved one to be able to live.

After your hiatus during the pandemic, what does it mean to you—personally and creatively—to return with an album that explores human connection in the face of collapse?

It’s reinforced my love for this art in all of its forms, creating in rooms with people, performing, or just spending time with folks in meaningful ways. I had been struggling a bit prior to COVID with performing, and, after being dropped by my agent right after my last record came out, was feeling a bit lost. The past 5 years of COVID and my wife’s illness, trying as they’ve been, have given me a renewed appreciation for what I’m able to do, and all of the people that I get to do it with. I’m really looking forward to getting out there to play in front of people and connect with them, in a way I haven’t felt for some time, or maybe ever?
