Just dropping by to say that, while I still really enjoy Big Bad nearly a year later, I like Mansions most with loud guitars and drums. Seems like all of the Big Bad songs were building to a grand climax that never came. The album is just missing the goosebumps-inducing moments that NBF, DUTD and DL had. Lyrics on BB are reflective and on point per usual though, which is nice.
Could not agree more. I never really return to Big Bad which sucks because I've been a huge Mansions fan since the very beginning on MySpace and was dying for a new record. Get Loose, PPV, Leader of the Pack, and Power Lines (which I feel should have been the opener) are solid but I would take most of Chris's work from Dead and Doom over those songs any day.
Interestingly, Chris addressed this on a podcast a few months ago. It was all very much intentional. He said there are probably alternate versions of all of these songs that are more traditional with drums, more guitar and rock bridges (he didn't say they exist -- it was more of an indication that it would have been very feasible to go in that direction). I do appreciate his willingness to pursue the creative direction of BB...just hope the next record is a little "bigger." That part starts around the 24:55 mark here: Chris Browder of Mansions (@MANSIONS)
Yeah I've really come to love Big Bad. Dig Up The Dead is an all timer for me but I didn't need another one. Happy with Big Bad.
agree about power lines being the opener. I made a playlist for the record and removed the first song
This interview was kind of a bummer. Super interesting, but I’m glad I saw Mansions as many times I did. Doesn’t seem like touring is in the cards unless it’s around Seattle
March 11th will be exactly ten years since I last saw them live. Kind of feel like I have to figure out a way to go to this.
My fiancées friend lives in Brooklyn and just invited us to come visit, so I'm pitching this as a trip to see her. They can go out to dinner and I'll gladly go to the show alone. Also, I grabbed that vinyl real quick
It's solid, and I love hearing new music from Mansions whenever I can get it...but I disagree. I miss the drums and the energy.
