MO's best song is without a doubt their cover of Escape. Nothing brings me more pure joy than that cover.
And they chose fucking Jack Johnson's far inferior version for the Walter Mitty soundtrack. At least we got it as a b-side.
Mean Everything To Nothing _______________________________ 1. The Only One - 9.5 - The revving up at the start, the guitar breakdown at the end. Another great start to the album 2. Shake It Out - 10 - the quiet breakdown to kick back in of the guitar and drums and then Andy screaming it out.....incredible 3. I've Got Friends - 10 - this song hits a large scope of what Manchester does right, keys, guitar, drums, vocals soft and hard 4. Pride - 10 - I feel like this song could have made Cope better if it was in it? Probably their hardest song live, and broken up properly 5. In My Teeth - 8.5 6. 100 Dollars - 6.5 - I know this song has novelty and is fun to belt out, but nothing much to it. 7. I Can Feel A Hot One - 10 - What a gorgeous song, the self doubt and the range of emotion. Lots of connections 8. My Friend Marcus - 7.5 - Honestly only enjoy the chorus on this song 9. Tony The Tiger - 8 10. Everything To Nothing - 8.5 - This song is great, but not one of my favorites on the album. It's a lot better live. 11. The River - 11 - What a brutally honest and redemptive song. Andy's conversations with God are some of my favorite and I remember honestly crying the first time I heard this song live. Not as complex musically as I've Got Friends but this rating is based on personal opinion and experience soooo Album Rating: 9.1 - What a monumental album for a bunch of barely legal drinking age kids in their sophomore debut. The range of emotions and conversations and variety found throughout is astounding. This is usually my overall #1 although it's always a tight battle. It earns a 9.1 based on song ratings totaled and averaged. Obviously most MO albums would get a 10 from me when compared to most music. (Reminder that I'm rating these tougher because they are my favorite band and I basically love every song...5 is average, 8 is great, 9 is incredible 10 is AMAZING! and you get one 11 per album)
Your note on Pride is why I think Cope was a let down. MO advertised it as "pound you over the head rock," so I was hoping for a song or two that built as hard as Pride. And then we got Top Notch and I was stoked that the album was going to go the direction they advertised. And then Every Stone had me like "meh." I still don't get what the line "Every stone I've thrown has gone away" is supposed to mean. And the album dropped and it was a bunch of muddy, mid-tempo songs that to me were not fit to be loud and "pound you over the head." They tried to force them into that shape and it just didn't work, imo.
Yeah one of my biggest problems with Cope isn't just musically and sonically or whatever. I also get absolutely nothing from the lyrics.
Posted in the new album thread cuz I'm dumb. Cope live sounds amazing. Cope everywhere else sounds ok. that's my contribution. You are welcome.
I own it on Vinyl and have it digitally, not sure legality of sharing it or posting it on an unlisted youtube for you to listen to.
Am I the only person whose least favorite song from these guys is "I've Got Friends"? I just don't like that song at all. Same with the Cope version of "Every Stone".
I've Got Friends is pretty good, but it could suffer from being over hyped and their "hit" if you will. Every Stone on Cope didn't click with me until I was on a road trip in a straight shot going 100 with the windows down and it blasting. As for the lyrics people have asked....I've seen it explained as his bridges have been burned and that's ok, he's moving on and it's in the past. He can't change it and he wouldn't.
I think that's probably what ruins I've Got Friends for me. Like when I first put the disc in my car after walking out of the record store, halfway through that song I thought "this song is ok, but i wanna hear what else this thing has to offer" and skipped it. Then suddenly its like the song for them. People are going crazy over it at shows, my brother is going on about how its his favorite and I'm just like, "Its a perfectly fine song, but every song on this album is miles better than it."
The first time I saw them tour for METN they played through their set and a few minutes later came back out and said "We didn't want to play this but forgot we told the radio station we would" and proceeded into "I've Got Friends" They played it like double speed haha. They definitely seemed about as disinterested as possible playing it.
I guess now would be as good a time as any to listen to Right Away, Great Captain, no? Starting with The Bitter End Edit: I enjoyed what I listened to from it (about the first 5 songs) but I realized I didn't have enough time for the whole thing so I decided to come back to it another day.
I added the three that are on Apple Music and will definitely be getting to them sooner than later. Also, are they all just Andy with guitar or was that just the songs I heard?
