I don’t even subscribe to a streaming service because I’d rather invest in the artists I like. Bandcamp has been a great resource in ensuring bands get a bigger chunk of the money they deserve. Spotify just doesn’t give them enough. I can’t justify it personally.
If you can pay it, do. If you can’t, don’t. Your ‘level’ of fandom is not based around whether you have an MP3 of someone playing My Name is Jonas or not. Bands define certain ‘class systems’ everytime they release a new record or announce a tour. Deluxe editions. Exclusive merch. Exclusive ticket bundles. Meet and greets. Soundchecks. Etc. Bands need money. He has two kids. He just bought a new house. His wife isn’t working either. This is what he does, and putting this stuff direct to Spotify isn’t helping them.
exactly. some folks spring for the $200 exclusive VIP bundle right away while others just grab the $25 vinyl pre-order. It doesn't make you any more or less of a fan.
I mean, there are definitely people who probably couldn’t throw down $7 or more for the last two bandcamp drops. Nobody complained about class then. If someone, unfortunately, doesn’t have the means to pay for the tiered service, they will find a way to get it just like people always do nowadays.
Speaking of which, @Sean Murphy your Only Fans pricing levels are outrageous, you’re literally stealing food from my family’s mouths.
The only people perpetuating any “class systems” among fans are the fans themselves, which is the actual problem here and not what Andy is looking to do.
Excited for the possibilities but slightly bummed that it probably means no more bandcamp demo compilations
The first thing he listed there is new songs. I am fan of music being inclusive and allowing people to discover new music as opposed to exclusive and only for those who can afford it with memberships get the new music.
I’m not sure I understand how this is any different than releasing it normally and charging for it? Regardless, it’s hard to imagine a world where you couldn’t hear one of these “exclusive” songs if you really wanted to..
Am I correct in thinking this can be translated to "I am a fan of music being free and available to everyone."? Just because a majority of new music is available on major streaming platforms doesn't mean an artist is obligated to put their music on the current industry trend's platform. You're being an idiot. This is no different than the band's online store.
artists should be paid for their art. them charging you to hear new songs is no different than them getting released on apple music or spotify or individual sale on bandcamp. i think we're all just so used to and comfortable with artists giving stuff out for free or just torrenting the leaks that suddenly an artist wanting to charge for their work is staggering for whatever reason.
The year is 1992. The band is R.E.M. The album is Automatic for the People. Despite what the name may suggest, the album was not automatically available to the people. It was released, for purchase, on cassette, vinyl, and compact disc. The people: WHAT THE FUCK I HAVE TO PAY TO LISTEN TO THIS?! WHAT A BUNCH OF SCAM ARTISTS, FUCK YOU STIPE YOU CLASSIST PIG!
