Cope would probably rank higher on most lists if it didn’t sound like it was recorded through tin foil inside of a soup can at the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

I’ll never understand how that album and The Wonder Years’ No Closer To Heaven got released. That an entire team of people wrote, recorded, mixed, mastered, and produced them and all of them said, “Sounds good, let’s release this” blows my mind.

I am no production expert and never will be but I get some of the complaints for No Closer To Heaven but not for Cope lol

Artists have deadlines to meet from the labels and producers have their own deadlines to meet because they're working with other clients. I'm sure there are also cases where bands never end up hearing the final product of an album until it's too late to do anything about it. Can't say for certain that's what happened with MO and TWY, but it's unfortunate because the songs on Cope fucking rip that album would be so much better if it didn't sound like a loud mess.

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

90% sure that's what happened with TWY, I know they've mentioned wanting to get it remastered at some point.

The songs on both records are great, I agree. However I do find Cope a lot more listenable than NCTH.

It helps that Cope has better songs in general

I don’t agree that either album’s songs are better or worse. I just think that the production on Cope ruins the album less than it does on NCTH.

Every Stone is BY FAR the best song on COPE

    Motel. Money. Murder. Madness.

    Cope was purposeful.

MO released COPE because nobody thanked them after Simple Math.

A few months back, Andy did a full run through of Cope with the two bonus tracks and Never Ending which was a Cope Era track by himself. I have it in my iTunes as Mope.

I’m probably on my own on this, but in my mind Cope & Hope are one cohesive project, and that makes Cope make so much more sense; chaotic, messy, gritty - contrasted with Hope’s more gentle, subtle production. They’re probably number 4 overall for me, and I do still end up coming back to Hope more (but that may be because I’m an old man now).

I completely agree. I liked Cope much more after hearing Hope

Cope is a huge rock sounding album that’s being throttled. I just personally don’t get the decision.

METN is also a huge sounding rock record that unleashes the big parts. Very well executed.

Cope/Hope are good and the production on Cope lacks in comparison to the production of Hope. I don’t wish they could remix/remaster Cope for an anniversary release or something to highlight the song he better.

Thanks! I do vaguely remember this now. I recall thinking the melodies were very similar to After The Scripture.

A Black Mile to the Surface
    Mean Everything to Nothing
    The Million Masks of God
    Simple Math
    COPE/HOPE
    I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child

Pretty easy for me at this point. Black Mile is flirting with being my favorite album of all time period, so there's a bit of a gap after it, even with how much I love METN.
