The highs on this album are really fucking high. It’s unrealistic for me to expect them to top the first 3 albums, but I think this sits comfortably at #4. It’s just barely better than Black Mile I think.

mine finally arrived (in Canada) yesterday. I don’t know if the should be encouraging for you all, like it’s still coming, or discouraging cause it made it to Canada first.

I think I'm still at METN No. 1 and Cope last - with everything else interchangeable depending on my mood - but I stand by Black Mile and TMMOG being the best two albums they've released.

    And Cope SLAPS

no cope hype allowed in this thread. also, this is their second to last best record.

We reach for the longest shadow

I'm in the vast minority in that I'd rather listen all the way through COPE than both ILAV and METN. I think those have higher highs (I Can Barely Breathe, Pride, METN title track, etc) but for me they have lower lows. I also think ILAV was really before Andy found his "voice" so I like how he sounds now better, and I don't dig the ultra raw performance of most of METN. Anyway, here's my ranking:

    ABMTTS
    MMOG
    Simple Math
    COPE
    METN
    ILAV

MMOG could definitely jump Black Mile over time, but it hasn't been out long enough for me to say that yet.

    Ala Pinkerton.

(No, I’m not directly comparing them)

Pinkerton was shunned right away, but most fans came around to it within 3-4 years.

Cope is not even close to that.

I love Weezer, but certainly am no deep expert. But when did fans ‘come around’ to it?

i remember still being told to ‘skip it’ in 2003-2004 by more than a few elder Weezer fans.

It seemed to be right after that time when I started noticing bands name checking and AP articles about it being the forgotten gem.

    anecdotal, though.

Like, before their next album even came out. I specifically remember going to see Weezer live in 2001 and my local paper did a write-up previewing the concert interviewing Rivers talking about how Pinkerton was a huge fan favorite despite lackluster initial response.

After the Pinkerton tour, Sharp left the band and Weezer went on a five-year hiatus.[68] During this time, Pinkerton amassed a cult following through internet word of mouth,[81][82] and a wave of mainstream emo bands including Jimmy Eat World, Saves the Day, Dashboard Confessional and Motion City Soundtrack were citing it as an influence.

I got into the band with COPE? Then went back and listened to the others. That could definitely explain it to an extent.

My ranking and reasons why. I know most people will disagree, but bands having fans with different favourites is a good sign for a band. Also when you start listening to a band impacts rankings.

    METN / ILAVLAC
    MMOG
    SM
    Cope
    ABMTTS

METN - I always love when a band doesn’t try and overthink their follow up. This album is raw, and doesn’t play it safe. They didn’t alter their path for more fame, and they just decided to go full out. They mastered their natural soft/loud sound on this and captured some desperation that are relatable to youth. Also, accompanying this with 14 years of Excellence showed the band variety (along with Hot One and Jimmy, He Whispers).

ILAVLAC - feels like a record a band would try and write after years of being together and wouldn’t even achieve. Such a variety of styles/tempos on this record to go along with the thoughtful lyrics. What a break through album for a young band. Nostalgia may or may not be factor. I still listen to this a lot.

MMOG - This record feels like a culmination of what’s been learned from previous MO records like SM, BM and ILAVLAC, Hope, Bad Books, RAGC and scoring. It’s feels like two faces record with a more intense half and resolutionary slower more reflective half. There’s a lot going on with this record and I’d say most of it succeeds if you’re an overall fan of Andy (and Robsrt’s work).

SM - Always felt like a big idea album but didn’t entirely hit the mark. Some really memorable songs and stand outs, and for me, some ok songs. I do wish all the Sinful Math could have been finished with the same professional recording and the best sons made this record.

Cope - it’s the big rock record that sounds flat. Why? Still got no idea. Some really good songs but it definitely needed a new set of production ears (Catherine and Ethan have helped). I think this record proves the songs are good with the release of Hope. Still wish they remixes or remastered this record to give it the sound it was written with. Also, After The Scripture should have been on here. Song is haunting.

ABMTTS - I find this record a little more boring and at moments a touch self indulgent. Again, a big idea I didn’t feel the impact of this record like most. Sorry. I do feel like it was brave endeavour. Just found no song matched my love for The Gold. The Parts is a nice song that feels out of place and could be a better fit on Bad Books. The Alien in The Sunshine feels like it’s a little one note (although I like The Sunshine much more). Sorry BM lovers. Also, I know How To Speak should have been on this album.
