Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile to the Surface (July 28, 2017) Album • Page 202

Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by RuckerPark, May 30, 2017.

  1. Wow, that's so fucked up. I really can't see a reason for that beyond maintaining P4k's "image" which hurts to think about. I always wondered why the Hotelier didn't get Best New Music for either of their last records.

As for the person who said I was wrong about Arcade Fire, I should have specified that the same reason they tore down Andy Hull (penchant for melodrama) is the same reason Funeral by Arcade Fire got Best New Music. Of course everyone knows the new album is garbage.

From that recently posted interview, I didn't know the story of the girl/about "After The Scripture" and that is so heartbreaking and amazing of the band all at once.

    I do not exist.

Had no idea either. Amazing of them to do those things.

Imagine viewing all of pitchfork as one writer

You may surprised to hear this: pitchfork has multiple writers who don't all share the same exact opinions. Crazy I know. It's insane.

I posted the results on Reddit I think it was 8 or so.

there was a reddit ama where people clarified this? i mean this is sort of correct but the score is almost always 100 percent dictated by the writer if it's going to be under an 8. (generally any record that hits the 7.8-7.9 ceiling is highly esteemed by the writer but they couldn't get editorial on board, which is fine i think, but this is why imo ian def legit thinks this manorch record deserves a 7)

  7. Hey, the passive aggressive subtle comments about my intelligence are a bit frustrating; just because I don't spell out every part of where my opinion is coming from to you doesn't preclude it being disregarded (even if you're just poking fun it's still frustrating). Of course I know there are different authors. But having read P4k for quite a while now, I've noticed that most records that could fit under "emo" (stuff in our scene) have traditionally been attacked for containing melodramatic elements, whether that's due to the individual writer disliking it and making offhand comments about how the penchant for dramatics holds the record back, or the score being reduced by the editor (such as the mention of The Hotelier up above). However, when a record such as Arcade Fire's Funeral, Broken Social Scene's You Forgot it in People, etc. are reviewed - when those records have melodramatic elements, the author(s) (yes, they are different) both said the albums were melodramatic but it worked for them with no real explanation as to the difference. The one difference I can notice is that you wouldn't call any of those bands part of the "scene" as we know it. This has changed recently, with records like Fever and Mirrors and Diary being vindicated years later on reviews for reissues. Of course there is variability from author to author, but I have noticed a trend of disdain for any band from our "scene." And, I get it, that's just P4k's schtick and usually it doesn't get to me. But I thought Black Mile to the Surface deserved more than a 7 (which is, as you said, a relatively good score - something you thought I didn't recognize). I just thought it deserved an 8 if not Best New Music, and that it was probably the victim of this aversion to melodrama due to Ian dwelling on that in the first part of his review (as well as his complete destruction of it on the Simple Math review).

Final note: I could be wrong about my analysis, P4k could be completely right about every album they skewered for dramatics, etc. But this is just what I've noticed after reading a ton of reviews. So I don't care that you're challenging my view, but just the way you're phrasing everything sounds condescending. Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but it comes across that way.

I'm not going through pages of a voting game I don't understand so I'm just gonna ask if people agree with me that this is their best since METN.

So is the song elimination thing done in this thread now? Because the album just came out and it'd be cool to discuss it and the upcoming tour rather than seeing pages of the same shit just on a different day

Song elimination ranking moved the the band thread.

This thread is now to exclusively discuss how amazing this album is.

But on the real, this album is seriously unbelievable. I still can't get over how fantastic the production is. I do hope more people go to Catherine Marks now, because she did an incredible job.

It feels like sort of a waste of time too, especially for an album that sort of just feels like one long perfect song ha

yeah its like, it doesnt really foster any discussion other than "damn my fav was eliminated" or "i hope my fav isnt eliminated" and its kinda pointless because, like you said, the album doesnt really need to be separated.

    but thats just me w/e

Honestly With what's going on in the world right now, if it takes people's minds off of it, it doesn't matter. The ranking thing has gotten sort of weird lately, it's been literally every thread. Even the hotelier thread started to do it.
