@EmmanuelSCastle no joke, I love that song. I think it's one of Andy's best vocal performances, love the lyrics, and that pretty much the whole thing is a buildup to the outdo. It's a pretty cool structure imo

  7. I'm pretty late to this thread so I don't know if this has been discussed but have people seen the Pitchfork review for this record (and their other records)? They seem unbelievably negative towards Andy Hull and his work in general. I know Pitchfork can be hyper-pretentious, but sometimes they still tick me off and this is one of those times. i mean, they gave this album a 7 and Simple Math a 5.5, and the actual text in the reviews make them sound even worse.

Fuck Pitchfork. I hate them with a passion. I've avoided them completely for awhile now.

  9. I think they have some truly great writing and occasionally hit the nail on the head in the way a lot of other journalistic outlets can't, but sometimes they are so hypocritical it is mind-boggling. Melodrama of any kind is a sin in their reviews (from any author) but then you see a perfect Pitchfork band like Arcade Fire praised for it.

I feel like the repetition of that opening is so clumsily done that it ruins the build up part and ultimately makes it a chore for me. I agree with the lyrics and vocals being great but those can't save the rest of the song for me unfortunately

I actually really like it. The instrumental breaks keep building, but every time the vocals come in it tones back down up until the end. I think it's a really well done buildup

When you think about how the parts were recorded, just andy playing the song basically live in a bathtub, it's amazing how great it sounds. Really captures an intimate moment and just feels so real

If P4k gave this a 7.0 that means Cohen thought it was worth more than that. In the Reddit ama Pitchfork writers said the reviewers pass their work to the editor/s then they all compromise and agree on a score.
Cohen rates Home Like Noplace Is There and one of the Joyce Manor albums among the best of the decade (per Celebration Rock pod) but neither even got best new music when he reviewed them for P4k.

I think it's amazing how this band can write a guitar line that's just single root notes of the chord and make it sound so good. I.e the second half of the second chorus of the mistake
