This was so dumb, I fucking loved it. I honestly can't believe some of this stuff in this made it. Real early Saw and Dead Silence energy.
I said what the fuck a minimum of 5 or 6 times before we got to the jail scene. 10/10 I love an original horror movie. Absolutely batshit crazy concept and from that scene on I was fully on board.
Watched it for the second time (first viewing was at home) this time in a theater, and holy shit what a fun experience that was. I knew I would at least like this, but I wasn’t expecting to love it this much. 100% my favorite of the year so far.
Sadly, as great as this is, it has barely made a dent at the box office debuting with an estimated $5.57m
I laughed so hard when the biological mom fell through the basement. It just got more crazy from then, and that police station scene was surreal.
Hope they’re getting a decent cut of that HBO Max money. No movie getting released in theaters and streaming on there is gonna do well at the box office. I really hope it doesn’t mean they give up on original movies
Yeah, this whipped ass. Some corny dialogue/moments and no real explanation for how/why Gabriel was a fucking killing machine, but also, you buy the ticket, you take the ride, and this ride was completely worth it. Great cinematography and practical effects. Gotta love Wan's commitment to creating something absolutely batshit and somehow pushing it through a major studio.
Very unique in that it telegraphs the twist from a mile away but the particulars when you get there are so fucked up it’s like a whole different twist altogether
His “awakening” giving reason to what I thought was pointless domestic abuse made me say oh, okay, clever plot-hole plug. The dungeon actually being the attic and all the questions of how is he physically there and what’s with her being “there” when he’s killing suddenly becomes oddly grounded. His telekinetic/electro mindfreak stuff is my only takeaway at this point.
they did give an explanation for the electricity stuff - "we did so much shock treatment it made him absorb electricity" - but it was so goddamn dumb they really shouldn't have bothered like, there's enough hints about him being The Devil that they could have left some stuff ambiguous and written off his more out-there powers as like, oh well, we don't really know what this dude is (really some atrocious dialogue and extraneous characters is all that kept me from loving this)
