I’ve never played MTG but my good friend (also not an MTG player) is a rare book dealer on the side and found at some Half Price Books a collection of these old MTG test cards which he bought for around $2000 total. On MTG FB groups/forums, nobody seems to be contesting that they’re fake and are estimating they’re worth probably 10x what he paid for them. One guy outright offered to pay $15k for them. He’s in the process of getting them appraised now
Another funny anecdote that reminds me of: I’m a criminal defense atty and a fellow atty friend had a multi-count burglary case where these guys pulled off a string of burglaries in a single night. And the first thing that tipped the cops off to them specifically was that one of the places they hit was a game store, and within a couple days, maybe even the next day, they went to a different game store with several Power 9 cards trying to sell them. Of course the guys at that store had heard that another local store had literally just had their Power 9 cards stolen, and these guys didn’t exactly fit the stereotype of MTG collectors. So they called the cops on them
I never got to do NEO drafts so I wanted to be sure and do at least one since it's back in rotation. Went 7-1 with a GW enchantment build. I've only ever read about the great limited environment and after playing it I have to agree, definitely a breath of fresh air. Saving my gems and WCs for what will hopefully be a good set next month in Dominaria United
Spoilers don't start until tomorrow but some of the art has been revealed and the set looks sick so far
Damn, so the story that starts in Dominaria United will play out over 4 sets, and we're going back to New Phyrexia (Mirrodin) for part of it. Also going back to Eldraine and Ixalan next year as well. LotV got her reprint. And 6/10 of the pain lands are back, probably will have the other 4 in the next set. Also Ajani :(
Apparently it gets a bad rep because it was very underpowered. It was a hit for the casual crowd because pirates and dinosaurs duh
Full set dropped today. Dominaria United Card Image Gallery During Guilds of Ravnica/Ixalan, the mono blue tempo deck was my favorite and it looks like there's enough here for another iteration of that since we already have Delver and Ledger Shredder.
I’ve spent a year and a half away from MTG. Can someone give me a TLDR version of the state of the game?
This is all in relation to Arena, can't say much for paper Magic. Zendikar, Kaldheim, Adventures in Forgotten Realms, and Strixhaven all rotated out of standard last week. That leaves us with the two Innistrad sets, Kamigawa, Streets of New Capenna, and Dominaria United (just started last week). First week of a new rotation is always aggro over everything while the meta adjusts and then it will eventually be a bunch of midrange piles. Mana base isn't as good as it used to be (dual sided pathway lands rotated) and 6/10 painlands were just printed, the other 4 will be in the next set. Right now I'm seeing mono black everywhere, they reprinted Liliana of the Veil and alongside the new Sheoldred and a bunch of other good black cards it's a house. There's gonna be a LotR themed Commander set next year, and there are Warhammer 40K Commander decks coming soon. Dominaria United is the first set in a 4 set arc, basically everyone vs the big bad Phyrexians. Next set is called the Brothers War, pitting Urza vs Mishra. Also going back to Ixalan and Eldraine next year. Probably a bunch of other stuff but that's off the top of my head
I literally only play Brawl. There are two broken Commanders that I kinda love. I play against them and people just go off. Really cool to see the combos. Basically a storm deck with a ton of 0 & 1 drop artifacts. Double TRON.
gimme lists. Been wondering what to do with the goblin guy but I've been wanting to try Ivy. Reminiscent of one of my all time favorite cards, Precursor Golem
Dope, thanks for the update. I was heavy into paper Magic and even though I played Arena, my heart wasn’t totally into it. The people I used to play with are all into Commander now. The last time I was playing, my decks were Abzan counters, Izzet drakes, and Sultai midrange. It’s been awhile lol
I dropped off a lot the last six months, wedding/holidays etc, Marvel Snap took over the time I might otherwise be playing Arena
yeah I've been getting behind on my daily quests, which is what happened the last time I ended up taking a break. New set comes out soon and that might get me a little more interested but it's kinda whatever for now.
