I'm the complete opposite sadly, the more I listened to this the less I liked it. There's some songs I just think are bad (Horses, I Got a Friend, Begging For Rain), a lot that are just dull and do nothing for me (Shatter, Symphony, Different Kind of World) and nothing on here is as good as half her debut.
It's always funny when I pop into the music threads here and see people's reactions and they seem to be the complete opposite of mine. Horses is probably my favorite track on here right now haha. Shatter might be my second favorite. I've seen a few shoutouts to Be Cool, but that one is the only one I could point to as b-side material. I understand the criticisms about I've Got A Friend. It's typically the corny type of song I end up skipping on an album. But the lyrics feel so personal and sincere that it ends up feeling very endearing. There's just something about her voice on this album that is so passionate and raw. It just draws me in. It's also a record that just sounds great overall. A perfect example is when the drums kick in for the bridge of Overdrive. They just drop over that distorted rhythm guitar and it feels like they fill up the whole room. I love it. I've never really sat down and listened to her debut in full. I've just heard the singles really. I'll be changing that soon.
Shatter and Be Cool are my two favorites from this. I don't dislike Horses, but do think it could've been a couple minutes shorter.
I think the songs are mostly more fully formed than the songs on the debut too, though. To each their own I guess.
Weird. I can't imagine thinking anything on here is better than Back In My Body, Light On, Alaska, etc etc etc.... but as you said, to each their own hah
Her vocals on this album are light years ahead of the debut imo. She has a lot more power, and you can actually understand what she's saying (unlike, say, The Knife). Both albums are great, though.
Finally listened to this in full. I thought it was just okay. Some good songs on here but does not hit in the same way HIIAPL did. Shatter is THAT song though.
Only knew Light On and Love You until I caught her Glastonbury set this weekend on TV. Tremendous. Love the energy and her vibe, nice mix between indie pop and 90s singer songwriters. A hugely watchable performer and sounded better live than on record.
