Horses is a great song to help describe what I struggle with in terms of her vocals. To be clear, I really like most of her music. But something about that song just sounds so *off* to me. It’s almost slightly out of tune when I listen to it, it’s SO hard to describe. I’ve played and written music my whole life and I have never been able to fully pinpoint what’s going on with her sometimes that doesn’t sit right with me when I listen to it. Anyway, she’s an awesome artist but sometimes her tracks just sound slightly off to me, and to this day I haven’t been able to figure out what it is or why I hear it that way.
Wasn't excited for this album at all but I came out with a really nice first listen! Honestly feels like the mid point of her first and second albums in more ways than one
I wish the Knicks anecdote was not included in "So Sick of Dreaming." I really like that song, but it's such an odd thing to drop in there.
As someone that shares your opinions on Surrender (clearly, based on all the notifications you just got lol), this pleases me to hear. Looking forward to going in with an open mind tomorrow
These “intimate” shows seem awesome, bummed I’m gonna miss the Boston one since I’m out of the country until next Thursday.
This is very nice, but it washes over me a bit in a way the first two didn't. The debut has such a melodic sparkle to it, and you can really feel the excitement and ambition of a debut album. And I personally think Surrender has a ton of thrilling goosebump moments. Not really getting either of those things here, but it is at least totally pleasant.
My first impression is that I like it (and it'll probably grow on me a bit in the way the other two albums did), but she probably shouldn't have told us that she wrote it in five days because it makes me hear the spots where she's using the same basic idea in different songs and where she might've benefited from sitting with some of the songs and letting them develop a bit over even just a few months longer.
gonna pour some coffee and hit play on this in a couple minutes. as someone who really really loved both HIIAPL and Surrender, i've privately been skeptical about this one. i think she's really good at weaving a specific sort of concept through her albums both lyrically and sonically, and i understand what she's going for here. but i wasn't a huge fan of SSOD, and while i like the title track, it wasn't treading a ton of new ground, which made me wonder how the rest of the album sounds. maybe these two singles work better in the context of the record. gonna find out in a sec.
Haha I remember when Nate Ruess said in an interview that he drunkenly improvised “Take It Back,” and I just remember thinking “yeah bro, we can tell.”
Have only dabbled with the first two but this was significantly less interesting than anything else I've heard from her tbh
Big Maggie fan, first initial thoughts from this album are exactly like someone posted above. It’s “pleasant” but I’m hoping it becomes more than just pleasant. ♂️
Oh wow I had no idea this dropped yesterday. Going through my first listen now and this feels like a much more natural transition from HIIAPL than Surrender did. Also agree with Craig, really wish that whole "knicks" bit was taken out of So Sick of Dreaming. So cringey.
Surrender was such a huge album for me - I’ve only listened once to this so far so need to let it breathe for a bit before coming to any firm conclusions.
Drove three hours and missed out on tickets to the Philly show tonight because the “line starts at 9am” part of the arrangement wasn’t true (and actually 0 people who got there after like 8 got tickets lol)
I was like I can go at 10:30 yesterday and was like yeah I misjudged the situation and left haha but thankfully I only had to take the subway
Really shocked to see this only debut at #48. The album is fantastic, she's about to go on an arena tour, and she's a relatively new artist. Would've expected at least in the top 15.
