Saw this. Thought it was great. Took half the movie to decide how I was feeling about it. Bradley Cooper and especially Carey Mulligan turn in two of the best performances I've seen in a while.
Just saw this. Mulligan was an absolute powerhouse. Didn't realise Bernstein was such a complicated, and for the most part, selfish man. Bradley Cooper captured and owned this role perfectly. Felt some of it dragged, but for the most part, really enjoyed it. Was stoked to hear the West Side Story Prologue.
Thought this was okay. Really only lurches to life sporadically, but Mulligan gives another great performance.
Yeah, okay is the word. It isn’t bad, but very much the work of an actor/director; showy shots, poorly lit, poor focus (not out of focus, but very cloudy) and an inconsistent directorial tone. i liked the performances well enough, but it’s melodrama we’ve seen a hundred times before The REM bit was an eyeroll
Saw this a few months back and its really stuck with me. Beautiful film. Right now in my 10 for year. Cooper is a legit great filmmaker
Seeing it get a bunch of award nominations but not really showing up on critics' lists is an ominous sign. American Fiction is in the same category.
The three films I’ve been most worried about this Oscar season are Maestro, American Fiction and The Holdovers (The Color Purple is another one that I’m not that eager to see either). They all seem like MOR movies that will come in and hoover up awards, and then everyone will wonder wtf happened. Especially during a year with like 8 truly great Oscar contenders. That being said I’ll reserve judgement until I see them, I just know my taste pretty well by this point. I saw Maestro this morning and was very underwhelmed by it. I’ll echo poorly lit, and I thought the compositions were quite boring as well. I think it truly borders on Oscar Bait territory. I just know a Netflix exec saw Tar last year and shit their pants, hence 2023 and not 2022 for Maestro.
Weird to say I’m skeptical about three movies that I’m not that interested in? Weird post. You’ve got to be consistently the biggest dipshit on this website. and Maestro sucked.
