So this definitely wasn’t very good, not even fun. All of the cast does a good job with what they were given, it’s just not good. The entire Uncle Ben storyline was not needed at all. This made Morbius seem like a fun time.
I can’t imagine this is more boring than Morbius. It was such a rehash of so many other comic book origin story movies. This looks like it should at least not be that type of boring? I’m in the theater for this now. So, I’m about to find out how her web connects them all.
The ship fight scene in Morbius is better than any fight scene in this film. I really feel bad for Dakota and team for having to do promo for this.
I mean, sure. But I don’t really know what sequence in this has anything remotely close as far as similar circumstances. Maybe the subway platform? Otherwise, what goes down here is expected given the characters involved. with that said… this was a rough watch. It’s not bad in a fun way overall. Definitely some dumb lines I giggled at. but a lot of clunky dialogue, especially when they were referencing Spider-Man lore. Not sure if lore is the right word, but I think you’ll know what I mean if you’ve seen it. I don’t think Dakota was even trying in the final scene. And I don’t blame her. I know they obviously don’t shoot in order, but I was over it the same way she seemed to be. I don’t even know what else to say. Since it’s early in the day, I guess I’ll use spoiler tags. having the girls only be suited up for maybe 30 seconds was the dumbest decision ever. Like, yea, other things would need rewritten to allow that, but I don’t see that as a bad thing.
Horrifically bad. Sony continues to stumble around and missuse great comic characters. They just need to stop.
Yeah, unfortunately I'm a sucker and I watch all of the MCU and Sony movies. I don't know why. I really like Spiderwoman and I wanted her to have her own movie and now I don't haha.
Also I realize I'm complaining about them continuing to make these movies then being someone who sees them in theaters and engaging in the discourse online
lol this shit ruled. What a stupid, fun movie. Truly what the 1930s/40s pulp genre known as the “superhero” was meant to be.
Ok, my longer thoughts, typed out with my morning coffee: - Dakota Johnson’s deadpan sense of humor was perfect for this role. There are dumb things that are “unintentionally funny” throughout this, but people are gonna be unfair and annoying about what’s actually just… successfully, actually funny beats. - The editing of that car rescue prerelease clip is not the editing in the film. Which, is obviously common for promotional clips, but especially noteworthy here, lol. (And, I wonder if the chopping here was partly to hide that Uncle Ben is in the movie???) - This film’s approach to Spidey lore is so fun. I love that Ben says he met May, and there’s a subplot of Peter being born, but both characters’ names are conspicuously almost-said-then-not (in a way that almost feels like Sony getting as much past Marvel as possible). And, there are a couple small jokes specifically funny because we as an audience know Ben dies in Spidey’s origin. - Some moments of Ezekiel as evil, murderous Spider-Man in a black suit are, um… genuinely cool, lol. Which is funnier when much of the film’s charm is how proudly uncool it is. - Most of the genre shit is good to me in the stupid, funny, camp way (I can’t stop thinking about weird, forgotten 1940s superhero comics). But, another weird genuinely cool idea snuck it: I like that Cassie has a vision with Britney Spears’ “Toxic” on the radio, and then afterwards hears the song start on the radio and has to rush to the diner ‘cause the girls will be dead by the end. - The nuances of how her powers work, with the weird bonus power at the end, and the Amazon tribe of spider people, and Cassie somehow taking a trip to the Amazon while a wanted person without the girls being caught while she’s gone… will all make people not on this film’s wavelength mad at it. The secret is to meet the film where it lives. Don’t take this shit seriously; superheroes are fundamentally silly; have fun!
I would not use the words silly and fun to describe this movie. Sure, there are jokes, but they’re really not the focus or vibe of the film.
I'm happy for Tim. Really. I do find a lot of amusement in his advice to "meet this film where it lives" but that kind of advice can take a hike for any MCU product, but whatever, I'm not even mad. You hear me? Please don't tell the papers that I got mad.
