Madame Web is an upcoming Sony Marvel film directed by SJ Clarkson (who's done a bunch of television work; most notably for Marvel fans, she directed some Jessica Jones & Defenders for Netflix). The most recent reported writers are... unfortunately the writing duo who also scripted Morbius. The film stars Dakota Johnson, who's famous for saying "actually, no, that's not the truth, Ellen" and locking customers into a coffee shop. Starring opposite Johnson is vintage car mechanic Sydney Sweeney. Who exactly they're playing has yet to be confirmed. The original comic book Madame Web was Cassandra Webb, an elderly blind woman with the mutant power of precognition (not to be confused with the other character that describes, who's Mystique's wife). When she died, the second Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter, became the second Madame Web. Will this be dumb? Likely. Will it be fun? Honestly, maybe. Certainly won't be worse than that Jared Leto movie...
Gonna be real. I'm not excited about a Madame Web movie for the same reason I wasn't that excited about a Morbius or Kraven movie without Spider-Man. Like, I watched the old animated series so I'm really most familiar with that version of Madame Web, and so I really just want to see her in the context of harassing Spider-Man. Remove that, and I'm not really sure what's left behind. And I'm not very familiar with the Carpenter iteration. I guess that does give whoever's making the movie the liberation to do whatever the fuck they want, but I dunno. I'm just not sure what to expect, and not in an exciting discovery kind of way, but in a "picking up unrecognizable trash from the ground" kind of way.
I'm pretty receptive to Spider-Man characters' stories without Spidey because that was always part of my reading experience. When I was a kid, the random issues I had included a Deadly Foes of Spider-Man (which had him in a minor role but was mostly about Rhino and Beetle) and a Green Goblin (the solo series when Phil Urich had the mantle). That was also when Venom made his successful transition to solo character. Plus, some comics with back-up stories focused on other supporting characters. Then I got a little older and found out about Cloak & Dagger. Fast forward a bunch of years, and I'm finally pulling the trigger on monthly subscriptions in the days of Steve Lieber's Superior Foes of Spider-Man. So... yeah. I'm all about them taking a weird swing on essentially a Spider-Woman movie (I love Spider-Women), using the cool name "Madame Web," remixing a few different elements into a new take. Plus, depending on what direction they take the costume, maybe we finally will get the black costume/Venom symbol in a movie!
I'm enjoying the casting for this movie but I can't for the life of me fathom what this movie is actually going to be lol
It’s obviously a secret Morbius sequel. None of the announced actresses are actually in it. It’s all a smoke screen. It’s morbin time baby.
Solid cast thus far. Big upgrade compared to Morbius (minus Matt Smith). Excited to see if anything is shown at SDCC. Worth mentioning that ProductionWeekly stated that Feige will sign on as producer for this. 50/50 in terms of credibility, but it would be pretty neat.
I wouldn’t put any stock in that Kevin Feige rumor, lol. The goal here is pretty clearly to introduce a “spider” character who isn’t Spider-Man to Venom’s world. After seeing Hardy & Marcel’s Venom, the producer I wanna see is Dakota Johnson (who just produced Cha Cha Real Smooth), not Feige.
If the talent is there to attract him to the film then I’m sure he doesn’t mind if it’s an MCU film or not. Probably saved him from signing a multi-picture contract, too.
Really want to like this based on the cast but kinda confused how the Morbius writers keep getting hired when as far as I can tell they've never made a good or successful movie. Just very strange to me.
Rumor is Emma Roberts is playing Peter Parker's mom and Adam Scott is playing young Uncle Ben !!???!!!
There were also theories of Adam Scott playing an alternate older Peter Parker, lol. Uncle Ben would be fun & funny, too, especially if they’re like “nah, Johnson is a younger Cassandra Webb!”
