My buddy and his wife started Mad Men last month per my recommendation, i'd been telling them to for years. Only took a pandemic to get them to finally start. He called me a few weeks ago telling me they couldn't get into it and I pleaded with them to keep going. They were only about halfway through season 1. They listened to me and kept going and then got hooked quickly. It's the second of my close friends I've had this experience with. I really think the big reveal about Don's identity in season 1 is what hooks people in, looking back I think that's what did it for me too. He's been texting me his thoughts throughout watching and it got me starting my 3rd rewatch with my girlfriend who has watched it through one time.
It's been such a long time I can't remember what did it for me. I really think I just loved the whole aura of the show. I don't think there was a specific moment. Just asked my buddy too if it was the reveal for Don and he said he just gradually got hooked and it wasn't a specific moment. I just always anticipate people telling me they couldn't get into the show when they watch it. I'm not sure exactly why.
Don’s monologue about what it’s like for him being a father in “The Flood” is heartbreaking and relatable and just amazing.
I was really hoping to be surprised today. I get that the asking price is probably high but I don’t see how streaming services are willing to pass on a rare “prestige” drama that doesn’t already belong to HBO.
I look forward to when they pause the Sopranos every time one of the murderers use a racial slur and an inter title tells us that this is wrong.
“Warning: in the following scene, Paulie Walnuts refers to a group of invisible ghosts as ‘fuckin queers’.”
I worry about how stuff like this is going to impact future shows and films. You are actually doing a disservice by trying to sanitize the past; that is how we ended up with so many people thinking Christopher Columbus was a hero.
anyone with a pea-sized brain would be able to know they aren't glorifying black face in that scene weirdly enough it's not the first time I've heard it being criticized. it's literally written to depict casual racism
