Illuminate clear/brown splatter vinyl showed up a couple weeks ago, and it has a pretty bad skip at the beginning of side b so it skips over the first minute or so of Stay Awake. I emailed NearMint, they sent me another copy…and it has the same skip. Is the whole variant botched ? Anyone else get it?
Anybody else notice those Insta stories Leighton posted on Sunday (or some time last weekend) showing DAW sessions for songs from Illuminate with "2024" next to the titles? I can't decide if I'm excited or not, the album is perfection as is and I can't say I cared much for the This December "re-imagining" a few years back. That said, I will always be here to give anything Leighton puts out a fair shot because those early albums mean so much to me.
Agreed on all counts Outside of those, they’d been posting a lot of artsy-looking things (that I admittedly didn’t pay a lot of attention to) that made me wonder if they were writing new songs too or if they were just posts for the sake of posts.
He actually pulled me back in with the two newest releases. He mentioned doing a b sides album years ago, but nothing came of it. Hoping for a new album at some point in the near future
Wow that is much nicer than my OG. Wildly underrated album too, listen to it as much as illuminate, if not more some years.
I already have this but I feel like the pressing isn’t great and the slip is on the wrong side lol. will probably pick this up tomorrow
I do love PIG, but it's a noticeable turning point where I really wish Leighton had just named it a new band (or solo project).
I like it too but I don’t listen to it enough to buy it on wax. I got both Illuminate and This December as nostalgia purchases and I’ve only spun them both once each.
Been relistening to 'Illuminate' in the car today Just the perfect album - There must have been some magic in the air in the studio/writing process because Leighton has really struggled to recapture that since. Mindy White's voice also adds a huge amount to the sound which made it perfect for me - What happened to the band after Illuminate? Did they fall apart?
Basically. Their original guitarist Steve and Leighton just didn't get along anymore and had creative differences. Which sucks, because I definitely lost interest once he was gone.
I think the guitar gets overlooked a lot because of the piano work - but some of it is incredible, especially on a song like One More Day
The guitarwork was the thing that made me fall in love with them. Sad we never got anymore music from Steve after he left. Just a few songs but nothing more than that. Talked to Ethan (another old guitarist) about it years ago and he told me he'd listened to more of his stuff and that it was crazy.
Yeah, without Steve's hand in the songwriting (and the other original members), the band was really never the same. I listened to Illuminate for the first time in a few months a week or so ago and decided there is no way it doesn't stay a top 5 album for me forever - the songs, performances, production, it's just timeless and perfect. I'm holding out hope that they're all still young enough to make amends and return someday, but I understand if not.
agreed that it’s the pinnacle of their material but i feel like the rest of the discography is scattered with some really great stuff too.
For sure, especially Assailants (which I think Steve wrote/tracked on but did not tour for?) and Paint it Golden. Some songs on Devil and Run Wild still work for me (Past Life especially is a standout), but each one felt a little worse than the last, and by Liquor, I'm pretty much totally out. Especially since the live shows were getting more and more disappointing as well, it was just depressing. I'm totally for Leighton exploring other musical styles, but I've said a million times he should have just renamed the band and let the Lydia legacy just be the first 3 releases.
Taking a look at their discography to write my last post made me look up these first demos on Youtube, and I'm not sure there could be a more nostalgic feeling for me than hearing this kind of recording quality from the good old Purevolume/Myspace days. Someone please recommend me other bands who did or who still sound like this, I miss it so much
