Same. Unfortunately a lot of the tracks sound the same over the last few full lengths. That said I do quite enjoy this new song.
In everyone’s defense, they did just release a new record less than three years ago. Also, to echo what others have already said, it’s hardly the same quality. I like todays version of Lydia well enough but it doesn’t come close to the first three records.
I adore about half of each of the previous few records and find the rest of each fine (except liquor, love that one all the way through). My main gripe has always been some awkwardly inserted super pop elements, but each record has featured snippets of fantastic instrumentation and vocal melodies. I was shocked when liquor’s reception was so poor since that kind of pop was huge on the site around that time. Even though the band has lost a lot of wind in their sails I still feel they should resonate with this site more than they do.
I wish Leighton all the best and want him to write music that makes him happy. BUT I also wish Steve and Ethan would come back and bring everyone else from Gates and write a record with some incredible guitar work again. It truly took This December and Illuminate to the next level. It almost feels like they haven't even made an honest attempt at recreating that sound, which I would have at least expected by now.
I miss Steve so much. Upset that he never ended up putting out more of his Saturn Hands stuff. Ethan said to me before that he had an a whole album and it sounded crazy.
While I understand that at some level Leighton has always been and will continue to be Lydia, I can't help but imagine an alternate universe where the band moved forward without him after Illuminate and what that would have sounded like.
Sorry, sorry. I do love Assailants also, but to me it's not quite on the same level. I know they are unrelated other than Ethan, but I like to pretend Gates are kinda the sequel to that era of Lydia.
Assailants is just as good as Illuminate IMO. I don’t really listen to either much anymore but I think I’d still want them for my collection.
I always preferred Assailants to Illuminate. But I just don't know if its something I want to own on vinyl. That purple variant with the green splatter is making my decision tough, though.
