Has a band ever burned so brightly for such a short time? I remember 'Illuminate' exploding back in the old days and it really felt like the start of something big
Not gonna lie, that sounds utterly fantastic and I plan on ordering the vinyl. Not sure about the Pillar thing though.
I feel like every time he puts out an album he says something about connecting with the audience and being more social lol I'd really like a tell all about this band that gets into the dirt from all the previous members. Definitely seems like a one man show that runs everyone else off. That said, I love Illuminate and still listen to anything they put out.
stripped down album could be really cool. although I wonder how much more stripped down some of those songs can get haha
This inspired me to go back and start at the beginning and rank the albums, got through the first 4 today, will edit this tomorrow after I get through the next 4. I really really liked Paint it Golden on this listen. Jumped up above Assailants for me. Edit: Run Wild also is pretty dang great. 1. Illuminate 2. Paint it Golden 3. Run WIld 4. Assailants 5. This December 6. Liquor 6. I Was Someone Else 6. Devil
1. Illuminate 2. This December 3. Assailants Honestly, nothing after those first three ever did anything for me.
Assailants is soooo good. Paint It Golden isnt terrible. I actually enjoy it. I remember digging a few songs on Devil.
1. Illuminate 2. Run Wild 3. I was someone else 4. Paint It Golden 5. Devil 6. Assailants 7. Liquor 8. This December... while I agree that illuminate is their best album, I rarely listen to it. I was in love with that album during a dark time and I don’t connect with it at all anymore. I also didn’t get into Lydia until after illuminate came out and I have never been able to get into This December...I hope the updated version will change that for me
1. Illuminate - yea 2. Paint It Golden - I think this record’s fantastic and a great follow up 3. Devil - disliked at first but in retrospect it’s well put together. Some first tastes of weird folkiness to come though. 4. Liquor - a bit plain, but super consistent and a great singalong record. 5. Assailants - could be higher by how great it sounds, but I don’t come to it often 6. Run Wild - has arguably the 2 best post-illuminate songs but some real stinker moments too 7. I Was Someone Else - feels undercooked and only a couple standouts, but a fun listen. May climb in the future. 8. This December - has 2 of the GOAT tracks but I got into them a bit later and it’s really rough sounding
so many people ranking This December low in this thread, y'all wild, that album is incredible I haven't even heard the new one, Liquor was pretty bad
The production on This December will always bum me out. It's such a good album that just sounds like ass to me. If it sounded as pristine as Illuminate does, I guarantee it wouldn't be lower than #2 on any of these lists.
I like This December but all the tracks are over 5 minutes and honestly, they don't need to be lol some really great stuff on it but definitely feels like a bands first album that was produced in their garage or something.
Always seemed weird that 'Devil' isn't liked more - I think it's a fine record Probably my second favourite Leighton album would be The Cinema debut - That's an awesome album
Relistening to This December now and it’s still fire. I dig the longer songs. I also think I prefer his vocals on this record. Interested to hear how the louder, more angry songs would sound stripped down. This is probably their angriest album IMO.
I signed up for Pillar so that I could watch the livestream, and the re-imagining of This December... is already uploaded there. I wasn’t a fan of that album but this is pretty good. I’m curious what fans of the original think the hotel sessions are also up as well. On a separate note, It’s funny to me that Leighton changed the Devil cover to plain black with white font for the deluxe. That original cover for Devil is one of the worst album covers I’ve ever seen
Haven’t checked out the pillar thing yet, but I did preorder the deluxe package. Interested in hearing the reimaginings.
