This is really the first one that's sounded noisy like this for me. I have a few others that skip in a spot or two, but this one sounds like there was just dust all over the place when they were pressing it.
I never really listened to her before but this record is just as good as Punisher if not better. Incredible songwriting.
I was lukewarm on this my first few listens, but it clicked last night and I'm all in now. Cartwheel especially is so damn good
Music isn't a competition but this smokes Punisher imo. Phoebe is the only boygenius member whose solo stuff I'm not all-in on at this point and I can't really think of why.
I understand the urge to compare their work but they do very different things, especially lyrically. Lucy and Phoebe are probably more similar than Julien from a writing perspective because their personal stories deal less in metaphor and have more humor, but the POV is squarely in Lucy’s head for this whole record vs Punisher where it gets a bit more omniscient and abstract.
I don't hear that myself, but at the end of the day artists learn from each other. I would think that's certainly the case here based on how close they seem as friends and collaborators (guesting on each others albums, writing songs to each other, etc).
I love the whole thing obviously but the stretch from Partner in Crime to Triple Dog Dare is just on another level
Is “triple dog dare” a common phrase in the US? I had never heard of it and had to look it up, haha! Kind of takes me out of the finale to be honest but the rest of the album is phenomenal.
Yeah it’s a common phrase in the US when you’re a kid. I guess you could say to your friend “I dare you to eat this worm” but then adding a double or triple dog dare makes it even more escalated of a dare. “I triple dog dare you to eat this worm.” It emphasizes the degree of the challenge/dare lol
OK, I guess we’d use “double dare” in the UK but kind of assumed that was used in other English-speaking countries too.
I believe the progression is dare - double dare - triple dare - triple dog dare. It's the highest one (that I know of).
I’d only heard of double dares... To be honest, I only looked it up to check it had nothing to do with three dogs or something weird like that!
