I really wish I liked this album as much as everyone else. It's a good record, and definitely my favorite album of Lucy's, but sometimes I find it hard to get into her voice. Songs like First Time start off great, and then it loses me when the singing starts. But on the flip side I think songs like Hot & Heavy, Brando and Please Stay are my favorite songs of the year. It might just be that this is a heavy album to take in, and I need more time with it.
I feel like I was blown away by Historian when I first heard it. I didn’t have that same experience with this one. However, Thumbs and the other singles are all individually great. Partner in Crime is cool and the closer is tight. But something is not connecting at the moment. It’s possible that I’m in a funk and not ready for it yet. Awesome to see so many people loving it though.
I would agree with your last sentence. This is a deep, heavy album. Again, to not get into all the details, this has been a very emotionally stressful year for me and this album hits many of the feelings I’ve had and am still reconciling with. It’s the perfect soundtrack for where my mind is.
Honestly, I don't think I can rate this against the other individual records from the boygenius crew. They are all great records to me. Julien's latest record was definitely the biggest shift between records but that didn't make it a bad record by any means. Phoebe's latest record still hits over a year later for me. Of course, their pre-boygenius records are all fantastic to me too. I think this new crop of indie singer-songwriters, including boygenius members obviously, is making some of the best music these days.
Love the album, not thrilled with the clear pressing. If anyone would like to buy mine just under retail cost let me know!
What songs are you all most excited to see on the tour? Mine are: Hot and Heavy Christine First Time VBS Partner in Crime Triple Dog Dare
Wondering if this is just the case with all of them. Posted about it earlier in the thread but my deluxe Summer Sky variant sounds preeeetty bad. I threw on a different record afterward to see if it was maybe just my stylus going out and unfortunately that was not the case. Might be parting with mine at some point too.
This isn’t shade towards Phoebe at all but I wish this album (and Julien’s tbh) could get the same attention that Phoebe and her album got last year (on here and just in general) because it’s just soooooo good.
Tried to go to Rough Trade in Brooklyn this weekend with the intention of buying Home Video only to find out it permanently closed AND that Lucy was actually signing copies at the same time at their Manhattan location. FML. But to cheer myself up I bought a ticket to her show in October.
Great record that I can tell will take some listens to properly sink in. “Please Stay” is immediate though. I can definitely relate to the subject of the song more than I wish I did.
Ahhh that stinks, the Brooklyn location closed in March! They just opened in Manhattan like 3 weeks ago.
On my first playthrough, and first time listening to Lucy I'm general. This rules. Gonna want to spend a lot more time with this.
It was a bad week for my favorite record stores between the Vintage Vinyl announcement and then realizing that one closed! Wonder why they moved to Manhattan. Any idea if it’s a bigger space? Foot traffic must be higher there (at least in normal times).
