real sobbing on a drive in the rain hours for my first listen tremendous early impression. just gets better and better as it goes
Listened to this in my car earlier and loved it. I'm listening to it now with headphones on and WOW. I also haven't been able to get this line from "Cartwheel" out of my head: The future isn't worth its weight in gold The future is a benevolent black hole
This honestly might end up my AOTY considering the only complaint I have is that we were promised a Beans feature and I don’t hear it
Waited in line at the signing yesterday in Philly for almost two hours and me and my brother bought two of the last three copies they had left. She was very nice and album is great.
Only listened to this twice so far, my biggest gripe is that the track arrangements are too similar and that occasionally bores me. Hot & Heavy is certainly better in context, I just wish she delivered more loud intensity on this record. I played Night Shift straight after and that song still takes my breath away Christine and Cartwheel are the clear stand outs for me - as a bisexual woman who was raised in the Greek Orthodox religion, finding my identity to be the opposite to the conservative culture that demands women be good housewives and mothers was so difficult. I repressed so many things about myself thinking that my parents thought like their parents when all they’ve ever wanted was my happiness more pain stemmed from bi stigma - my ex dumped me so I couldn’t cheat, since I “swing both ways” and from the man who sexually harassed me when I was a minor fetishised my sexuality. I pushed it as far down as I could until my partner and I were getting serious, and even that was terrifying For years I tried to convince myself that my feelings for girls were totally platonic but I knew deep down that I felt love and desire for beautiful people, no matter their gender. I knew that my jealousy when my friends started dating wasn’t because they had boyfriends, it was because I wanted to be their partner. I just couldn’t admit it. So when Lucy sings about being in love with a girl in her boyfriend’s car, she transports me to the most confusing times of my life but she makes them feel way more cinematic. She is without a doubt one of the most wonderful storytellers of my generation.
This definitely is taking the top spot for me this year. Didn’t think it would top J Brekkie but wow. Not to get into it, this album fucking speaks to me right now.
Here’s an extremely hot take: This is the best album (so far) from the individual members of boygenius. Arguably a more cohesive album than Little Oblivions or Punisher.
This is a hot take but I respect it. Tbh it’s probably my least favorite of the three (more of an observation on the strength of these albums). Punisher is just the best album by a decent margin imo. I think Little Oblivions has more tunes than this one, and Julien’s bombastic catharsis helps push it to another level. Lucy is an incredible songwriter but I can’t help but want the music to be a little more dynamic, I feel like it’s wanting to burst into a million different directions and it just never really does. I love the Slayer moment on “VBS”, the tunefulness of “Hot & Heavy”, the slow build of “Triple Dog Dare”, the crunch of “First Time”, and the incredible storytelling on “Thumbs”. Don’t get me wrong, this will end up probably somewhere in my top 20-30 at year end, but I feel like at some point Lucy is gonna make my favorite album of the year.
I am loving this so far. Only observation so far is the instrumentation in Brando reminds me of Plans era Death Cab in the best way possible.
I think JB is better at individual songs that carry the emotion throughout them but the album doesn’t have the flow that Home Video does. Punisher, a year out, is a slightly clunky album on the whole. The hype was largely the result of the pandemic and her smart decision to still release it without being able to tour. Ultimately I don’t think it’s going to be her best work.
Just blind bought this basically lol. Have only heard Thumbs and the album wasn't even announced then.
My only real criticism: Cartwheel is the song on here that kind of disrupts the flow for me. It's a nice enough song, and her delivery reminds me of Adrianne Lenker which is always a good thing, but I wish it were elsewhere on the album. It's also entirely possible that by "disrupts the flow" I mean by the time that song comes on I know Thumbs is next and I get impatient since it's her best song =)
If you dig this album you should check out the new Squirrel Flower record. It's got some similar vibes and I think y'all would dig it. Squirrel Flower - Planet (i) (June 25, 2021) • forum.chorus.fm
