I truly cannot believe she didn’t meaningfully puncture the sonics to better represent the materialistic decay underneath some of these songs. “Dominoes” is begging for it.
I still don’t think this is nearly as bad as some people do, but I’m already cooling on it. When Melodrama came out, I couldn’t tear myself away, whereas I haven’t had a desire to hear this since last night.
this makes no sense. a producer and co writer have a massive impact on how the songs they work on turn out. how are people continuously trying to argue otherwise?
Because it's literally her project and constantly undermining her impact is weird af. She even said she took even more control over the production and writing of this album than Melodrama.
no shit lorde has an impact on her own project. the complete opposite end of the spectrum where jack had no impact and nothing any producer could have done could have saved this project (when that producer, again has 8 cowriting credits) is just as asinine as the complete strawman people keep picking at
I'm gonna assume the songs are bad because the artist that wrote them wrote bad songs, not that Antonoff came in and made them all bad. Idk why you wouldn't default to the artist here
Maybe the album is bad and both sides of this argument are right. At their core like 95% of these songs are dull as shit and the entire “concept” of the record is annoying. Lorde is bad for coming up with this stupid shit and JA is bad for not stopping her or making it more interesting or whatever the fuck he does
its both! why cant it both! why cant it be that jack came in and made the songs even worse! his mark is everywhere! he has cowriting credits! i feel like im going insane by being told i cant criticize the dude who produced and cowrote the album!
I mean, I was speaking generally about how people blame everything on him like the artist doesn't even matter in the equation so no I wasn't telling you anything. I think largely these songs are just not good and it wouldn't have mattered who produced them because this is the album she wanted to put out so while it can be both I don't see why the focus needs to be on Antonoff instead of Lorde.
The thread dunked on @iCarly Rae Jepsen for saying Lorde was privileged for the “message” she was sending but idk. Pretentious is probably the better word I guess. After hearing the album, every piece I read about this record makes me more and more annoyed. Unplug and go hang out with a millionaire’s rich kids and go on Good Morning America thanks for the advice!
There’s way more going on here lyrically than people are giving it credit for. This thing is full of lyrics about self-doubt and she’s constantly asking herself and the listener if any of these coping mechanisms are worth anything. The first few lines of Stoned, the anger toward the guy in Dominoes who pivots to yoga and weed after an abusive past, the whole conceit of Mood Ring where she’s plainly stating that nothing can make her feel anything. I think it’s obviously more nuanced than “just throw your phone away and hang out in the sun”
trust me if she gave me something more interesting in the actual music I'd go back and listen for that
Yeah say what you want about the songwriting but it’s weird to me that people think this record is shallow or vapid. There’s some obnoxious tropes for sure but also a lot of stuff that feels pretty poignant
