Oh my gosh, no. Why take it so personal? Damn. I'm talking about the twitter-sphere in general. Jack was extremely popular with them around Gone Now, and over time he's only gotten bigger and that just comes with more criticisms, because he's exposed to more people that may not like his style, or he gets overexposed to people that already once liked him.
It’s just weird to generalize such a large population (“the Twitter sphere”) like that, I’m sure plenty of people who liked gone now still like him, I’m sure plenty of people who liked gone now have gotten bored of his style as it has become more ubiquitous and, in my opinion, more sanitized over time especially when applying it to other artists and not his own project, though I’ve never been a fan of bleachers to begin with. I just think I laid out pretty easy to follow reasons I don’t fully get down with him and immediately it’s like, people hate him because he’s popular or whatever? Probably read too much into that I just think it’s silly to act like there’s no merit to the reasons some of us don’t get down with him, whereas I think there’s plenty of merit to reasons why people do love his stuff and think he’s great and would never go out of my way to discredit someone who was a fan of his work, just offer my two cents on why I personally am not
nah, I wrote this before your post was there. it was in relation to the posts about yours about producers having their own styles across projects
fair enough, although I would just point out (not sure if this has anything to do with what you’re saying or not so bear with me) max Martin is about a thousand times more talented than jack antanoff and still falls into the same traps as any overexposed producer would, with redundancy in his style (mostly in his writing rather than his production which is frequently updated to reflect what’s current on radio) and sanitizing an artists sound but given his role as the radio whisperer that’s kind of the point of going to max Martin, obviously The Weeknd’s trilogy material and the stuff he did with max Martin are light years apart and the edges were completely sanded down when he worked with him specifically to get on the radio
Album is 0-2 for me so far. Jack's fine when he isn't doing the same melody over and over. I swear some of his production now is just Steel Train redux. Masseduction is great.
Jack's work with Taylor and Annie have been his producing highlights. Listen to Massseduction and you don't hear an obvious Jack influence on the entire record, same with Daddy's Home (even though I think Annie missed the mark with that record), Taylor has a very complete vision of what she wants her records to sound like and Jack slides in and compliments her well, some of 1989 being the only spot where the JA-signature synths bled into the production. His work with Lorde has been pretty middling. Not a fan of either track from this new record. The edge and darkness she brought on her debut is completely gone (granted, Billie bit her style a bit on Where Do We Go...). There's nothing exciting or unique about these new Lorde tracks. Wasn't this record supposed to be a response to climate change and its impacts? Or did I make that up?
As someone who hasn't cared for any of his produced albums (melodrama being the best but still a step down from pure heroine) I agree with the tweet
This song is fine - will be interested to hear how it works in the context of the album as for jack - he’s whatever hit or miss with me - I do like how the Clairo record sounds tho
I guess I like the “edges sanded down” sound, cause this is great. I don’t think of something made to appeal to the masses as a bad thing really. But I’m pretty reactionary in general to music…I either like it or don’t after only a couple listens.
Jack is amazing. I think it’s less about his production and more about the direction the artists wanted to go. So far I’m not a huge fan of her new direction, but I’m waiting to judge in context of the full album.
Solar Power's easily one of my favorite songs this year and Nail Salon reminds me of something like Writer In The Dark, 2 for 2 so far
Okay I love this song. Can’t really say I understand any of the complaints about it sounding “sanded down” but that’s how subjectivity works I guess.
The only other thing I’ll say is I’m not really sure why this particular song caused so much discussion (not just here but Twitter as well). I don’t really see how it’s fundamentally different than the more stripped down songs on Melodrama (Liability and Writer in the Dark). Obviously it’s fine to just not like the song, and it’s sort of a weird track to put out as a single, but it’s just not striking me as being egregiously Antonoff-core.
That was fantastic; don't think it surpasses day drinking with Rihanna, but it was still a great watch
Not really crazy about the Lorde singles and it has to do with the songs themselves rather than the production. Enjoy Jack's sound tho. I forget arguing about music happens on this site.
