i don't think he's a neutral presence as a producer at all. he's capable of many different modes but i've also found it pretty easy to clock when he's produced something for swift or crj

and ldr with antonoff is pretty different from ldr with other producers, just my experience

  5. Jack has just been out there producing so many records recently. It's obvious some of those wouldn't resonate with people like his other work. I will say though, I've been more negative on projects he's worked on recently. NFR! and the recent TSwift stuff were the last things of his I really enjoyed start to finish.

Yeah, the worst thing about these takes is that they remove the agency from the artist. This seems to be clearly the vision she was going for, and she seems really excited about the project and how it came out, which I would say is the primary job of the producer.

LOL at Jack being a "neutral presence," wtf is that even. Everyone who works with him on full projects consistently says he is a full collaborator on the projects, that by definition means he is not a neutral presence. It's extremely clear he adds a TON to the music he works on, this conversation is insane

and the existence of Melodrama automatically makes these tweets irrelevant. You can't get mad at Jack for Lorde's current sound if you aren't going to also acknowledge that he had just as much involvement with her last record. PLUS these tweets are incredibly sexist to assume that the man producing the music has more say than the woman whose name is the artist

This is not at all a criticism of either song. Just found a similarity. Ignore the caption.

Here's the summary of music criticism for Jack:

If you like a Jack-produced song/album: The artist made great music
    If you dislike a Jack-produced song/album: it's Jack's fault

I did not like the last two st Vincent albums at all. I don’t like either of these two lorde singles either.

Masseduction is amazing. Daddy's Home has 3 songs I really enjoy, but the rest is a dud.

Sadly, I'm not feeling either of these Lorde songs.

It’s not even remotely sexist to acknowledge that jack has a large hand in the results of the albums he works on lol. You’re not getting a Steve albini or a Rick rubin when you hire him, you’re getting someone who is going to drastically impact your sound and your vision and that couldn’t be more obvious when you listen to his discography. Like three posts earlier you were arguing he’s not a neutral presence but now somehow it’s sexist to acknowledge just how big of an impact he has on the artists sound he works with?

anyway he’s mediocre as fuck, even the “great” albums his name is attached to are extremely overrated in my opinion, and are great despite his lackluster, sanitized production style that is frequently at odds with the artist he’s working with (see: reputation). but whatever, if you enjoy his work more power to you, it would make my life easier if I actually liked what he puts out, unfortunately to my ears he often leaves a whole lot to be desired and does a disservice to the women he works with

the part that I find sexist is that the discourse is not "Ella and Jack are making new music that I don't like," but rather that Jack is ruining Lorde's music like he is some sort of all-powerful force who decides what she can or can't do. It jus really comes off as the man in the musical relationship being the focus of the discussion.

and obviously not everyone is going to be a fan of his style, but the first two Bleachers albums, Melodrama, folklore, Gaslighter and Lover are some of my absolute favorite albums of the last 10 years so I won't complain

It's weird to me how many people aren't feeling these songs. Just as good as anything on Melodrama to me and sounds very unique.

no one literally thinks jack antanoff is some Svengali type figure that gives these artists no say in what happens on their albums, but the role of producer especially in pop music is substantial, and you can’t help but wonder how some of these albums would have turned out with someone else at the helm. at the end of the day yeah, lorde or whoever chose jack for a reason and that’s their call and their vision, but it isn’t sexist to acknowledge the large impact jack ultimately has on the sound of the artists he works with, for better or for worse. the man is the focus of the conversation because we’re talking about the production, which was handled by a man who is predominant in his field with an identifiable sound that’s easy to pick out when listening to an artist that’s worked with him. it has nothing to do with discrediting the women and downplaying their role, it’s just that we are literally talking about the production and thus the producer and again I don’t see how you could argue jack doesn’t have a huge impact on the sound and vision of who he works with, if he didn’t he wouldn’t be as popular as he is

I agree with most all of this, my note was only referring specifically to that first tweet about "Jack sanding off Lordes blah blah" and nothing more outside of that. I agree with your post but still am not a fan of the tweet itself

Like both Lorde songs, like Jack as a producer on things, can see with how much he's been on now people thinking his style blends into each other on projects a bit
