music about sad things can make me sadder than i'd be if those things actually happened to me. like, i've had my mom pass and i handled it very well. if i hear a song about losing a parent? torn to shreds.

i'm bad at RIYLs but it's some of the saddest, most heart-wrenching low-fi acoustic you'll hear, mount eerie/phil elverum's (also of the microphones fame) love letter to his deceased wife. sparse production, with all of the attention on the lyrics make it a really rough listen but it's incredible.

 

Music can make me sad but it's pretty much never due to lyrical content, it's all tone for me

Instrumental music makes me much sadder than lyrics do

it was my favorite record of last year and maybe the best hardcore album i've ever heard, if it can even be defined as such. it's sad but it navigates the topics in cathartic, uplifting ways. fucking masterpiece.
