I find that approaching music as homework is the best way to get into it

woah i just saw @Ken say CE is his fav Thursday record. it is also mine but mainly because it was the first time i gave them a shot outside of WATT era singles. 99% of my Thursday listening has only been CE and ND

I just like listening to it and I can't multitask that well as it is so if I focus heavily on picking out words and reading lyrics I'll miss subtle musical decisions that I want to pay attention to

Definitely. That’s why the chorus music club was good for me, I didn’t feel I have a choice. But I have to bench that for awhile. Sometimes even that feels a little exhausting

the last time i did the sit-down-with-lyrics listen was Touche Amore's Stage Four and prior to that was Goodness by The Hotelier. it's great but i rarely purchase physical records at this stage so unless i wait for them to pop up on genius it's a lost art

I just don't care about lyrics as much as the music itself or even close to it. Sure lyrical content is good and I appreciate good lyricists, but when it comes to listening for lyrics I moreso pay attention to the sounds of different syllables and how well it flows/works with the music

When I get a new album, I usually just listen to it first, and then on my second go through I’ll listen while reading the lyrics

I'd do the potato with mint and cilantro, I usually do potato and chick peas but I don't see that

this is interesting and i'm typically more of the opposite. however since i have accepted my depression as a thing i tend to stay away from sadder stuff that i used to love, and the fact of the matter is happy music oft comes from less introspective places(not always) so over the last couple of years i've gravitated to a lot more pop and stuff with less focus on the writing

we can all agree that btmi! is the best happy sad music right tho

Unless a lyric jumps out at me I'm not making the effort to remember it

I don't lean one way or the other @Fucking Dustin which infuriates Randall in music discussions haha

That's the weird thing too I guess: Lyrics in general don't feel sad to me hahaha. Like there are exceptions (a couple PBTT songs come to mind) but the mood of the music itself makes me much sadder than any lyrics that go with it

Xiu Xiu is extremely good happy sad music (when they go the happy tone direction) but in a very different way than BTMI! who is excellent

Julien Baker was one of my most anticipated of last year and i've only listened once because a good sad song can ruin my entire day and send me to bed at 6 lol

Yeah lyrics are very hard for me to pick up on. @thesoftskeleton was shocked to the core when I told her that
thanks, that does sound good. I have no idea what Indian food is but I want to learn

    Same hahaha

It's just moreso from the chord progressions themselves than the lyrics

Lots of piano-only songs send me into a crying fit

This makes sense. I listened to that Nick Cave record after reading some people recommend it and yeah, the lyrics were certainly sad, but the music felt so dull and boring to me that they had no effect.
