Shit, I just saw that they changed the rules of this and everyone has to listen to Hounds of Love 52 times in a row. Sorry, everybody
Did we come to a definitive agreement on all listening to the same thing or just all picking our own and talking about them? And are we discussing them here or on the other site?
i think we’re picking our own stuff, but there might be some overlap with choices. and discussing here, while posting reviews on that site if you wanna
Those are actually both the choices I was hoping for. I may honestly have to do the pace at 2 or 3 a week rather than 1 a day, but if we're discussing in here, then I can still hop into talking about ones I've heard.
I've never seen this site before, but there's some baffling shit on there. Ray Charles' Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music has a 4.5/10 average?!!
I was so mad that I went on a rating spree, just to fix some of the more ludicrous lows. Heart Like a Wheel had a 5. Eff that.
yeah, i liked this a lot. definitely gonna make an effort to check out more of her stuff. "totally get the appeal from this. wish i had come around it sooner. fiona's voice fucking rules and it's abundantly clear a drummer (fiona's touring drummer) produced this - some of the jazzier and warmest production on drums i've heard in this genre. it makes sense to me that her and PTA were connected to each other - this feels like the music version of a PTA movie." think i'm going to go with dylan's slow train coming for the "left turn" week. never really gave any of his christianity-themed albums a try. i don't suspect i'll like it but he's also that dude.
Jk got to it tonight. I really liked it! Posted a more detailed review on Listnd, but I think the only song that didn't do it for me was Daredevil
Screamadelica today. Might also run through Jimmy Eat World's discography. I still don't get the extreme fervor over them. Don't dislike them, but it hasn't clicked yet. Maybe today!
they have a handful of albums that are classics for me that i love but i agree that ive never quite gotten the total hype for them. the fact that people here placed latter day jimmy albums as some of their favorites of the last decade is baffling to me
Crossposted: This opener, are you fucking kidding me?? I had no idea what to expect when I threw this on. I have a scratch-off poster in my classroom of 100 Albums to Listen to Before You Die, and I run through it with my Modern Lit class as the kids give presentations on each album. This is probably one of three or four albums on the list that I had never even heard of, let alone never listened to. I was familiar with the name Primal Scream, but only because they were on the Tommy Boy soundtrack with "Call on Me". A pretty great song, but I always just kinda wrote them off as a Stones revival band in the 90s. I played the shit out of that Soundtrack as a kid. I don't know why, but it was always an album I brought along in my little CD carrying case when we'd drive down the shore. I thought I knew every word to "Eres Tu" by Mocedades. I remember one time my friend and I kept playing the "Housekeeping" bit over and over and I didn't know what "jack you off" meant and got in trouble for saying it. "Come On Eileen"... what more can I say? Anyway, this album is pretty great! Definitely hear the trip-hop influence on the second track. It's a cool combination of styles. The third song kinda reminds me of the Space Ghost theme, I dig it. This album is wild! Switching styles and flowing in and out of genres all over the place. I wasn't feeling "Higher Than the Sun" (err..the first one, I guess?) until midway through, but it really morphs into something beautiful. I feel like this album is doing so many things at the same time and instead of feeling messy or bloated it all just flows together into something special.
hell yeah. one of my favorite albums, a production masterpiece. "movin on up" kinda leans into that stones revival type stuff you mentioned, but does such a good job of it. slip inside this house and loaded are two of the best tracks of the 90s.
fiona apple's the idler wheel this is the first thing ive heard of her's aside from "criminal", and i think understand why she receives the praise she gets. for starters she has a tremendous voice, not only is it powerful but it has such a range of emotions, theres songs where she sings the same line in different ways and they take on such different meanings (jonathan comes to mind). the instrumentation is phenomenal, obviously the percussion here is a standout, but im very impressed at how well she can match her piano with the tension of the drums. this kind of reminded me of what ive heard from florence and the machine stylistcally, but unlike florence's music which seems streamlined to be easily consumed and fit perfectly in an oh so charming indie flick, fiona's music is raw, uncompromising, and sometimes too uncomfortable or tense to be so easily digested. i want to hear more from her but i think right now i want to spend more time with this album and really get into her lyrics. i made an account for listnd but i think id raher just stick with posting my thoughts here. i do like the concept of the site and plan on using it, but it definitely seems like it still needs some work. (in case anyone wants to add me) ill try to get week 3 in by tonight. im gonna do the ministry album since it seems to be a highly regarded industrial album, which is a genre that really interests me but i have little knowledge of. ive probably heard screamadelica too many times to really do it for the challenge in good faith. great record though and i should probably listen to more primal scream albums
if youve never heard any then harrison's all things must pass is the way to go. you cant really go wrong with any 70s harrison record though. im personally going to do mccartney's ram.
