everybody throw out a nomination and whichever gets most wins? or we could do a name randomizer and come up with an order and one person picks per week?
im interested. are we posting our thoughts on it tomorrow? or is tomorrow just the first day for week 1 in general?
got to this a bit earlier than i expected. pasted the review from listnd: "feels a little silly to critique the composition of something that has been a part of the canon of music history for well over a century, when i just listen to the same soundgarden songs over and over. the best thing i can say about this is, and it seems pedantic to say it, but at times this reminds me of my favorite moments from my favorite movie scores. i'm sure they're all inspired by this, especially desplat. the portion around 3 minutes - 6 minutes of Adagio seems particularly in the same alley that he plays with."
For tomorrow/week 2, it's an overlooked best of the 2010s album that you haven't heard. I'd say Gorillavsbear had my favorite list of things that I definitely hadn't heard before. Any other options for that? Should we all do our own, or one that most of us haven't heard? It might be interesting to find the highest ranked EOTD album that you haven't heard and listen to it. Week 3 is a change of direction for a band. I can't really think of one of the top of my head. Maybe that Garth Brooks album where he changed his name? Week 4 is Max Martin. I've never heard the debut Robyn album, that could work? I'm also very open to revisiting a Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears album. I don't think I've heard Baby One More Time in full in over a decade. The other three I have no real input. I've never heard a post-Beatles solo record by any of the members, I don't think. Haven't heard any of the Verve recordings, either, and Pat knows more about the Headbangers one than I do
I’m open to either. If multiple people want to do the same one, do that. If you wanna do your own, do that. As long as people are doing it and it doesn’t die out like most other things, haha
yeah, that works for me. i’ll probably cross-post my reviews here from the site everyday/week when we get to that point, and peep what i’m gonna listen to the next day/week to keep everyone updated with what i’m choosing. i think i’m gonna go with the fiona apple 2012 record tomorrow. have never really listened to her, p4k had it top 5 of the decade, and she seemed super interesting from the recent interviews with her for this cycle.
the challenge is really good and i like the categories selected. dude that created it seems like we probably don’t have much overlap in taste though haha. said he doesn’t mess with bowie at all and severely panned double nickels on the dime. bad!
friend of mine who happens to fuckin love Brahms also suggested schicksalslied if anyone wants an extra one. will listen to both prob tonight
its safe to say that the intricacies and the general impact of this piece is lost on someone like me. its a beautiful piece that seems delicate even in the more intense moments. i always figured i would be more drwan to the more dramatic parts but i found myself gravitating more to the more subdued moments, i think its because whenever there was intensity i pictured...well, an orchestra. the calmer, "prettier" moments transported me into my own thoughts, my own interpretations of what was happening. feels like a bit of a cop out to say that many times i was reminded of my grandfather, but while that may seem like the most basic of connections, its true. i also love my grandfather, so its a good thing. i agree that due to logistics its gonna be a bit tough for everyone to do the same album every week, but i think that way is more interesting. so given that i also have not heard the fiona apple album i will also be doing that for tomorrow.
anyone have any suggestions for week 3? im thinking of alanis morrisette - jagged little pill ministry - the land of rape and honey the killers - sams town primal scream - screamadelica but idk of anyone has any other options. the obvious ones i think would be kid a or several bowie albums, but ive heard those a million times so id rather go for something else
screamadelica would rule. would definitely go against the no repeats for me, though. i think im gonna do one of the 80s synthy neil young albums that i always skipped
